CAR HITS TRAM POLE.
BUSINESB MAN KILLED. ; MR J. R. HAYWARD, CHRISTCHURCH i' (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. One of the best-known Christchurch ; business men, Mr J. R. Hayward, aged • G 5, manager of Hayward Brothers and Company, Limited, was killed this morning, when his car swerved off the road in Colombo Street and struck a tramway pole. He was driving alone from his home in Cashmere to the city. One theory is that Mr Ilayward suffered a sudden heart attack. Mr Joseph Robert Hayward was managing-director of Hayward Brothers and Company,•manufacturers and merchants. He was horn in Christchurch in 1870 and 1890 he established the llrrn. He was president of the Canterbury Employers’ Association in 1915 and the following year, a member of the Christchurch City Council ! for several years and also of the Lyt- ' teiton Harbour Board from 1927 to ■ 1929. Hu was steward of the Can- . lerlmry Park Trotting Club, lie leaves . a wile and one son.
