WATER COLOUR PAINTING. ■LECTURE AND DEMONSTRATION. ADVICE TO BEGINNERS. An interesting and entertaining lecture on water-colour painting, with demonstrations, was given by Mr Rix Carlton before an attentive audience at the Toorak Hall last evening. The lecture, which was under Hie auspices of tlic Waikato Society of Arts, was given under the chairmanship of Dr. E. T. Rogers, who introduced the speaker. In introducing ins subject Mr Carlton said tie would he speaking more particularly lo the younger generation, to those who were merely beginners. Text books on art could he read from cover lo cover without further knowledge being gained. There wore numerous “tricks of tin; trade" in art 1 hat could bo best acquired by experience. Watercolour work was the oldest method of painting, being even older thiin oils. The one thing t.o he looked for in work of tills description was purity and clarity. Mr Carlton Rich gave a brief outline of comparatively easy methods of obtaining the best results, iliustraling Ids explanations by a practical demons traliou.
