FOSSILISED MINDS.

(To the Editor.) Fir,—The claim by Mr Marcus James that his remarks about fossilised minds” is not abusive will not, I think, stand up to criticism. It was a sneer at the mental status of those who disagree with hi? theories, virtually calling them “pigheaded buffers, and, put Into those words, is decidedly abusive. His reference to the “outcasts”- caused by recent discoveries strengthens my case considerably, for it shows that trained minds are not fossilised. I know that the Darwinian theory of evolution is under heavy fire at present, not on account of fos- ; silised minds, but because men well ! up in the subject are, in the light of recent discoveries, not satisfied with the proofs offered by Darwin. This cannot be accepted as a proof of the possession of fossilised minds by the leaders in biological science. As for the new economics, they seem to me to be in such a nebulous ■condition that it is difficult to do anything but regard them as a doubtful theory not yet raised to the power of a science-—I am, etc., ITHURIAL.
