SEQUEL TO HEAVY RAIN.

WHOLE ISLAND AFFECTED.

Telegraph communication lost Owing to heavy falls of snow In most parts of the South Island yesterday and last evening telegraphlo communication with the chief centres was Interrupted for the greater part of the night. For a time all communication with the South Island was Interrupted, but towards midnight It was possible to get In touch with , Qreymouth, where the snow was reported to have extended further toward the sea than at any time slnoe the beginning of the winter. Messages received In the early part of the evening indicated that the snow had been general In all districts of the South Island.

' FALL IN CHRISTOHURCH.

HEAVY ON FOOTHILLS. (By TelPjrranli.—Press Association.} CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Snow began to fall in the city at about 5 o’clock in 'the evening, and at half past seven was still falling steadily. It was preceded hy heavy rain and the wet surface caused the snow at flr3t to melt as it fell. Later it began to show white on roofs and roadways. Heavy falls were reported to have been general in the high country of Canterbury and on the foothills of the Southern Alps.

INVERCARGILL COATED.

SNOWBALLING IN PARKS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Sunday. Invercargill is coated with snow, the fall in the city being the heaviest for some years. The weather yesterday was cold and stormy and outdoor sports in Invercargill were postponed, although Rugby was played under adverse conditions in some of the country centres.

Snow commenced to fall in the early hours of this morning and at daybreak there were two Inches on the ground. Further snow fell during the day, and by the early afternoon there were nearly three Inches. Snowballing was freely indulged In during the day, Queen's Park golf links being the scene of some merry battles. Reports from the back country state that the falls there were very light, some places, notably Te Anau and Mossburn, having none at all.

COMMUNICATIONS LOST.

SOUTH ISLAND TELEGRAPH. RADIO STATIONS UTILISED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The Post and Telegraph Department advise that communication was lost with Christchurch between 7 and 8 o’clock last evening when that centre was cut off from all telegraph stations to 'the southwest and north. Communication was established between Wellington and -Christchurch by radio and between Wellington and- Awarua for all stations south of Christchurch. The main trouble appears 'to be north and South of Amberley and In the vicinity of Rangiora. There has also -some 'trouble (between 'Christchurch and Darfleld which has cut off communication between Christchurch and the West Coast.

Wellington is still able ‘to communicate with Blenheim, Nelson, Westport and Greymoulh. Blenheim Is able to get Waiau. Messages from Wellington to the south to-day are being worked by radio from Wellington to Christchurch, from Blenheim to Dunedin -and from Nelson to Timaru. Wellington is" also working Awarua. The Postal Department says there is a good prospect of Christchurch establishing land communication toy to-night. It frequently happens that wires are brought down in the area affected by this storm, but rarely does it happen that the poles are affected. This Indicates a very heavy fall of snow.

STORM AT CHATEAU. HEAVY SNOW ON ROAD. CHATEAU TONGARIRO, Monday. A severe storm has been experienced during the past 24 hours at National Park. All the telegraph lines except that to Taupo are out of order and heavy snow is falling. The Bruce Hoad (o the Chateau is under a foot of snow.
