CHILDREN’S VERSES.

THINGS I LOVE. The joy of a self-appointed task, The scent of dry, new-watered grass, The perfume of a winter rose, The drippings from a leaky hose. A haze of dust outside the door, Gay patterned carpets on the floor, Birdies twitt’ring in the trees, The drowsy hum of homing bees. A rainbow bright above the skies, A pair of. sparkling clear blue eyes, A happy heart, —contented mind, Such lovely things are these I And. (Original.) (Sent by “Ranee”, 14.) A PICTURE. I can see an imaginary picture, When I close my eyes once more, 'Tis of a little old cottage, With one window and a door. It stands amidst a garden fair, Of lilies, tulips, and cornflower blue, Sweet-smiling roses grow o’er the porch;

And under tho eaves is a nest or two. To complete this picture there stands at the door, A little old lady with snow-white hair, Looking at the garden with a smile on •her lips, For she’s managed to And her happiness there. (Original.) (Sent by “ Ranee”, 14.) THE FISH. On summer days I often wish That I could be a little fish; In waters cool, and dark and deep, To float, a-dream, or sink to sleep*, And leisurely to glide between The pebbles brown, and cresses green; And push my nose into the bank, And smell the earth, all soft and dank; And turn my head to float downstream, Where cool reflected flowers gleam; From shaded deeps to slowly come Into the bright pools of the sun.
