The article In question declared that Britain Is Italy’s enemy In East Africa as much as Abyssinia, having pushed Abyssinia Into attacking Italy at Ualual under the eyes of Colonel Clifford, and also having inspired Abyssinia’s overweening polioy by training Abyssinian troops. Further the article asserted: "Brit« ain risks provoking a European, even a world, conflagration. If she Is looking for war she. shall have it. Italy does not wish to fight Britain's hired assassin. She prefers to settle the account with whoever remains in the shadow’ arming Abyssinia. “We have no fears, having long meditated upon the consequences of a conflict with the great naval Power which is oppressing three-quarters of the world and is trying to secure the other quarter. “Aeroplanes, within a few hours, could make Malta an uninhabitable rock. Moreover, the last word has not been said regarding- Gibraltar and Suez."

Eden, referring to the many wild accusations lately directed against the British Government in the Italian press, said: It is unfortunate that sucli misrepresentations should have been ■allowed to appear, particularly because of the effect they might have on the excellent relations between Britain and Italy. He described these press stories ae mischievously absurd and fantastic. There was no reason why the British, •and Italian interests' in regard to Ethiopia should not be harmoniously developed. Mr Eden added: "It has been our constant endeavour to help bring about a permanent settlement mutually ■satisfactory to Italy and Ethiopia.”
