POISON FOR RABBITS

UTILISATION OF TINS. i DEPARTMENT GRANTS REBATE. A suggestion from the 'Farmers’ Union that phosphorised pollard tins should be used again at the Department of Agriculture’s poison depots, instead -of being discarded by the farmers when once used, was -commented upon by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. C. E. MacMillan, In a letter which came before the "Waikato Sub-Provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. The Minister said the suggestion had been given full consideration, but the difficulty was that the mixing oi pollard poison was not carried od throughout the year. Even during the period while it was being mixed, loose pellets of the right consistency for tinning were not always available for farmers, who might call at the poison depots with their tins. “The position can often be met only by the -opening of new tins and the filling of the contents into the old tins brought in,” he said. “This would be inconvenient to the Department as it would mean at. times the stopping of the machinery while the employees attend to callers with tins for refilling. As a concession, however, the Department is prepared to try this out in order to see whether such a scheme is practicable, and a rebate on the price of the tin will be allowed. “The -cost of -cartage to and from the station would, it is considered, make it uneconomic to receive tins forwarded by rail unless large numbers were returned at a time.” It was decided to draw the attention of the Department to the fact that the old tins oould be retained, and new tins issued. The secretary,' Mr W. H. Allen, was also Instructed to ascertain the extent of the concessions to be allowed. ‘
