MAN’S EARTHLY PARADISE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Lord Bledisloe is so appreciative of Now Zealand, its people, its climate, and its scenic beauties that lie obviously used the term “Man’s Earthly Paradise” quite 'sincerely. It might easily become so, tout that is another story.

That it is hardly an earthly ,para J dise. for many thousands at the moment is evidenced by the fact that Archbishop Averill has suggested that Sunday, the 19th, toe consecrated by all the Churches for special prayers that God will inspire our legislators to introduce measures that will eliminate unemployment, with its resultant want, misery and moral degeneration. ’ Let those , who have faith in objective prayer carry out Archbishop Averill’s suggestion in all sincerity, but if those prayers are merely a transferring to God of all responsibility, then it is to be feared that they may be of little avail. Wo are told to “work out our own salvation,” and since this depression is man-made (the only other conception Is that God deliberately created it), then men can. end it if they so desire.

“Prayer is the soul’-s sincere desire, uttered or unexpressed,” and if we have a “sincere desiro”- to really make New Zealand “man’s ' earthly paradise” -it can only toe accomplished through the ballot-box. “Work out your own salvation" by voting against those who would continue an economic and social system which ha-3 proved such a ghastly failure in distributing the generous gifts of God with justice and righteousness. In no other way (except, of course, by revolution) can the curse of qnemployment toe eliminated and "social justice” too attained.” —I am, etc.,
