OBITUARY.

MR G. D. STOKES.

The death took place on AprH 30, 1935, at Invercargill, of Mr George Day Stokes, second son of the late Mr R. Y. Stokes and the late Mrs Margaret Stokes, Itostrevor Street, Hamilton. Mr Stokes was born at Dunedin and in 1864 came to Hamilton with his parents at the time when the landing on the banks of the Waikato River was at a point near the present traffic bridge. After experiencing the hardships of the early days of the Waikato he went to Australia and became interested in the activities of the Koolgardie and Broken Hill gold mines. He also was associated with coal and gold mining in New Zealand. His general knowledge and .his opinions on commercial and industrial problems were always valued—especially by the late Sir Joseph Ward and their association was maintained throughout the political life of this statesman.

Mr Stokes was a man of sterling character and possessed the qualities which have made the name highly honoured in both the Army and the Navy. The deceased bad a very retiring disposition which along with his sterling character won him the respect ami high esteem of a large circle of friends. 11c is survived by four sisters and two brothers, Mrs T. Jones (Tc Kowliai), Airs F. W. Delaney (FranlUon), 'Mrs W. Lawrence (Sydney), Airs A. U. Delaney (Ongarue), and Messrs Oliver Stokes (Huntly) and Edward Stokes (Westport).
