INAUGURAL MEETING HELD. ATTENDANCE OF MINISTERS. GOOD WISHES FOR 'FUTURE. WELLINGTON, Friday. The inaugural meeting of the newly constituted Dairy Board held yesterday, was attended 'by Mr C. E. Macmillan, Minister of xtgriculture, and Mr J. G. Coates, Minister of Finance, both of whom extended the Government’s best wishes for -the success of its work. Mr W. A. lorns, as chairman of the old Dairy Board, welcomed the Ministers, and said that tills was a big day in the history of the dairy industry. I-Ie felt sure that with the further powers given the new board they would be entering upon an era of very efficient service to the industry. He assured the Ministers that their presence was very much appreciated, as all members knew that they attended at considerable inconvenience to themselves.

Mr G. E. Macmillan said that with the inauguration of the new board, additions were being made to the functions and authority held by the old board. Tlie new board under Section 12 of the Act, had wide authority in New Zealand as well as in connection with export. All board membei-3 knew what had led up to the changes. The local market had been in a chaotic condition, and several deputations had met the ‘Prime Minister and himself, who gave promise to the Industry that some organisation would be vested with the control of the local market. The industry looked to the new board to do something almost immediately. The advice not only of himself, but also of Ills department, would at all times be freely available to the board. Mr lorns said that before Mr Coates spoke he would like lo apologise for not having wished Air Coates every success in tlie mission he was about to take overseas. The Dairy Board realised that this mission was of paramount importance and it did not agree with those people who said that the time was not opportune for the visit. The board had Hie utmost confidence that Hie Prime Minister and Mr Coates would handle tlie negotiations lo tlie very best advantage. Co-operation Essential. Mr J. G. Coates said that the board which had previously represented tlie industry had done an enormous amount of work which reacted to Hie benefit of tlie industry. 4le believed it was essential that industry control, and particularly control of primary industries, should be centred in direct representatives. He hoped that the board would approach carefully all Hie many questions with which it would have lo deal. He knew of no men heller qualified Ilian they were to organise tlie industry to Hie point where they would have the ready co-operation of dairy factories and suppliers lo meet tho many situations that were hound to arise.

The keynote of Ihe whole business lay in co-operation-—co-operation on Hie part of suppliers, dairy factories, Ihe Dairy Board, the Executive Commission, ’ and the Government itself. It went without saying that Hie itovcrntnenl would co-operate with lliem to the fullest extent. He thought it was essential 'to have co-operation between the dairy-farmers of the Dominion and the Government, if they got Hint they would have gone a long way toward meeting the present situa-
