WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

AT KAIPAKI The annual meeting of the Kaipafo Women's Institute was held recently Mrs Graham presiding over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Institute -song and creed, after which the annual report and balance sheet was read and adopted, the balance sheet showing a credit balance. A vote of thanlcs was accorded Mr C. McEldowney for auditing the accounts. The retiring president, Mrs Graham, thanked the committee and all members for their help and support during her term of ofilce. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Graham, Miss 'McDonald (secretary) and Miss D. Frew (treasurer) for their work, and they were presented with bouquets by Bernice 'Cowie and Doreen Boyd. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs A. Goodwin; vice-presidents, Mesdames T. Searle and F. Cowie; -secretary, Miss D. Frew; treasurer, Miss 0. .Kite; committee, Mesdames T. McCarthy and D. Mitchell, Misses 0. Kite, V. Wallis, 'C. Catchpole, M. Boyd, P. Steenson, and D. Frew; Press correspondent, Mrs A. Goodwin. The competition for a plain machine-stitched article was won by Mrs Graham, with Mrs W. Cunningham second. Jumble tetter competition was won by Mrs 'Cowie. The roll 'call was a funny story. The sales table, in the hands of Misses Graham and Boyd, was most successful. Mrs A. Kisher was elected to -serve on the Cambridge Group Committee for the ensuing year. Afternoon tea was arranged by the hostesses, Mesdames A. Fisher, F. Finley and A. Goodwin. Committee Meeting. At'a committee meeting, held on Wednesday, the president welcomed the new members, and wished them a happy and successful year of office. Owing to Anzac Day falling -on the usual monthly meeting day, it was decided to hold the flower show and meeting on Wednesday, April 24. The roll call will be “How to make our men folk happy’’ and -the competition, three date -scones.

AT TE KAWA. The monthly meeting of 'the To Kawa Women's Institute was held in the hall on Wednesday, when Miss

Jefferson presided over a fair attendance. Miss B. (Penlington acted as secretary ■in the absence of. the secretary through illness. An intereasting talk on food values was given by Miss Jefferson. Mrs H. G. Smart won the competition for the best plate of shortbread, ! and a bring and'buy stall did excellent; 1 business, as a result of which the Institute funds will he greatly augmented. -.Mesdames Hiskens and Chestnut. 1 acted as hostesses for the afternoon.

AT TAUPIRI. i The annual meeting of the Taupiri j -Centre Group of the Women’s In- ■ ’Stitute held in the Taupiri Hall on ’ Thursday was most successful. The 1 group president, Mrs W. J. Bridgman, jof Gordonton, occupied the chair, ; members being -present from the | Whitlkahu, Orinl, Gordonton, Horotiu, I Ngaruawahia, Taupiri and Komakorau ! Institutes. During the morning Mrs ! .Harsant, secretary of the Waikato 1 Federation of Women’s Institutes, | gave an Interesting address on the j duties of officers -of the Institute, ■After lunch Mrs Trevalyn King, of Mt. Eden, Auckland, lectured on Maori legends and music, and gave delightful recitations, Maori songs and dances. A competition for a display of three vases -of different flowers was won' by the Taupiri Institute, with Gordonton second and Komakorau highly -commended. Afternoon tea brought an enjoyable and instructive day to a close. AT NAWTON-ROTOKAURI. Mrs J. P. Terry presided over the monthly meeting of the Nawton-Roto-kaurl Women’s Institute held in the Nawton Hall on Wednesday. The meeting opened with the -singing of the Institute song and t-he -creed. Several new members were welcomed. Points prizes for the year were won by Mesdames Craw-shaw first and Curtis -second. The roll call, "Articles for show’’ brought forward a good display. Mrs J. P. Terry gave an interesting demonstration of -sea-grass stool making, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Much amusement was -cau-secL-by members' attempts to -sketch the president, and nibble an animal out of 'a biscuit. Competition for best pot of jelly -resulted: Mrs O’Brien 1, Mrs Vane 2. The -social committee Is -convened by Mrs Waters and members are 'Mesdames T-ombes, Terry and Collins. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Waters, Lerke, Barrel! and Magnell. •
