“MRS NOBBY CLARK.”
NEW ZEALAND ACTRESS-MANAGER. MARIE NEY’S PRODUCTION. Even though the unalluring words “'Productions, Limited” were tacked on to her name, the arrival of Marie Ney as an actress-manager at the Comedy 'Theatre was an exciting event, says a London paiper. Whether “Mrs Nobby 'Clark,” a study of Burmese . domesticity by Murray MacDonald ,and Gilbert Lennox, deserves as warm a welcome is another matter. It tells the old, old story of the somewhat cultured bride from home brought suddenly face to face with all the rigours of social life in the tropics. Of course, she attracts a bachelor (who unde'rs'tajndis her tastes. Of course, there is nothing wrong In their friendship. Of course, everybody thinks the worst Inevitable Developments.
The inevitable comic bout of bridge is offered as comic relief. The in-
evitable accident keeps the soul-mates out late. 'The inevitable breach between husband and wife occurs. What does all this matter? Who cares what variant of itho eternaltriangle ending is used? Still we may record that the bachelor returns to England and becomes engaged to be married. The wife decides to leave 'Burma all the same, graciously consenting to see her husband at some future date.
As usual in this type of play, all the characters are foolish. The wife would be simply a tactless idiot —were she not endowed with Miss Ney’s bright, eager spirit.
