GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS,

Left at Poet. Pomp put up a slashing performance in the Christmas Handicap on Boxing Day, when, after being left at '•the post, he finished fifth and gave the impression that he would have been difficult to beat with an even break. His chances should come later in the meeting!.

On the Improve.

Lady Kyra is on the improve and she further impressed on opening day at Ellerslie by her running in the Queen’s Plate in which she deadheated with' the favourite, Kelly. Always handily placed in the running she was battling on gamely at the finish. Old Charge Stands. Though toojokmaiiersi ,a<re Hot licensed at racing and greyhound traoks in England,, they oan be charged five times the ordinary amount for admission. Most of the clubs enforce that charge. In the House of ’Commohfi last month It was sought to have the amount reduced at greyhound meetings to double that paid by the general public, but the amendment was defeated, and the hooks will continue to pay five, times as muoli for admission as an ordinary patrbn .of the sport. Lady Ruler. iLady Ruler was at a ’good return to win the juvenile event on the first day of the Auckland meeting and she bore out the promise she had shown in her race at the Waipa meeting when she was unluckily beaten. Hitting the front early in proceedings the Te Awamutu representative set a torrid pace to live up fully to her reputation on the tracks. By Chief Ruler from Tinowiro she is a stylish youngster in appearance and should 'go on to better things.

Nearly There. Aft'er endeavouring to win from end to end Golden Wings failed only toy a neck in the Christmas Handicap on, the first day of the Auckland meeting. He was fraotious at the harrier, hut as the tapes were released he jumped out smartly and at the end of a furlong was in charge to lead to the distance where Princess Doreen ranged alongside him.

An Optimist. Racing men are of necessity optimists. True to type is a Victorian trainer who took a young horse a two-day walking- journey from Omeo, in the Australian Alps, to race at Lin denow. He invested £lO on the horse, which 'finished second. “I guess he’s a bit new,” said the trainer, “but all he wants is time. I’ll put him away for a couple of years." The point of the story is that the trainer is 95 years of age.

Bun Fight,

Bun Fight was unlucky in the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslie on opening day. Missing the jump out she was badly placed early in proceedings, tout was travelling over everything at the finish. Belter placed earlier in the race she would undoubtedly have turned the tables on the winner, Lady 'Ruler.

Big Offer Reported. It Was reported that after Ben Field won at Rosehill recently, a Sydney trainer made an offer of 3500gns for him on behalf of a patron of his stable. A remarkable offer, if correct, and the general opinion was that it was made on behalf of an owner who has recently taken up racing in this city, and is prepared to put a lot of money into It. Ben Field’s Sydney engagements next season include the Derby and St. Leger. Sliver Jubilee. Silver Jubilee was finising on fourth on the heels of the placed division in the big sprint on opening day at Ellerslie. He drew' No. .1 position at the barrier but the advantage in the draw was counteracted through getting squeezed back early. An encouraging feature of his exhibition, however, was the fact that he was going great, guns' at the end. 'He will do hetter later in the meeting as there is no doubt as to his ability to cover the ground.

Rather Unusual. It is not. often that an owner has first and second in a handicap at a metropolitan meeting, but the New’ Zealander, [Ur. W. R. Kemball. had that experience at. 'Caulfield recently. Re won the Alfred Handicap with the Limond mare. Palm Queen, and his three-year-old filly, Queen Helen, was second. The former started at 8 to .1, and the latter at 10 to l. As •Fnere were only eight runners the chance of either was not highly rated. Though in the same ownership, the horses mentioned arc In the care of different trainers, \V. Hawthorne having Palm Queen and G. Jones Queen Helen.

From End to End, Scotland endeavoured to win the 'Queen’s Plate fropa end to end, but proved unequal to the task on opening day at Ellerslie. He will do better over a shorter distance. Consistent Gay Blonde. ■Gay Blonde lived up fully to her consistency when she scored in a fine finish in the Railway Handicap on the first day of the Auckland meeting. While she had little to spare in a blanket finish with 'Gay Seton her performance was a highly meritorious one and fully bore out the promise she had shown in her trials at Takanini.

Traok Work Was Good.

It was as the result of her pleasing track work prior to the meeting that iPrincess Doreen was sent out the public’s choioe for the Christmas Handicap on ’Boxing Day at Ellerslie. While she had little to spare at the finish she won on her merits and as the raoe will have improved her she should wifi further at the meeting.

Was Squeezed Baok. Kelly was somewhat unlucky not to win outright in the Queen’s Plate on opening day at Ellerslie. He met with a check near the five furlongs post and under the circumstances did well to make a dead-heat of it with 'Lady Kyra. Consistency has been a feature of Kelly’s recent performance and he will do better at the meeting.

Won Decisively.

Assisted by the fast pace set by his stabelmate, Symcony, Legatee was able to come fast at the business end of the six furlongs in the Great Northern Foal Stakes and prevail decisively over the hot favourite, Galilee. The Posterity colt won like a good one and should add further to his laurels at the meeting. King March. King ‘March was responsible for a solid performance in the Auckland Cup in 1934 and but for covering a little extra ground through going on the outside of his field at the turn he may have set the winner a sterner task. 'He is a mass of condition at present and strengthened the good impression he coated in winning the Te Awamutu 'Cup recently. Made Most of Pace. The Te Awamutu trained Solarium made most of the pace in the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day hut faded away to have no,, chance with the placed division at the end. Prior to the meeting Solarium had been responsible for several impressive track trials and his Cup chances were held in high regard by his connections. He may make amends over shorter distances. Faded Out. The Te Rapa trained Respectful was the outsider but one for the Queen’s Plate on the-first day of the Auckland meeting and after showing out at the turn faded right out of the picture over the deciding stages. Prior to the meeting the track work ol' the Raceful gelding suggested that he is susceptible to improvement and he may do better in the latter days of the meeting.

Not Disgraced. Galilee w’as not disgraced In the Great Northern Foal Stakes. She drew fairly wide out at the barrier and had to cover extra ground to be within striking distance of Symcony across [he top and at the straight entrance. The extra effort entailed found her wanting in the deciding stages and she failed to prove equal equal to the devastating finishing run of Legatee.

His Best To Date.

(Gay Seton gave his best exhibition to date when he failed only in the last few’ strides to win the Railway Handicap of 1'93-i. The son of Gay Shield and Persis gave a dashing display 'and he was responsible for the fast time set —time which equalled the record for the distance, 1.11 3-5. 'Gay Seton was produced in the pink of condition —a tribute to Trainer J. F. Tutchen.

King Musk Disappoints. King Musk proved a disappointment in the Queen's Plate on Boxing Day. After being on the heels of Scotland across the top and into the straight he faded out over the business stages of the trip. However, it would be unwise to lightly discount a good hack like King Musk. He has shown in the past that he is capable of better things. Presence Not Desired. A stir has been created in Queensland racing circles by the news that the Q.T.G. eommitlee, following a recent meeting, informed a well-known punier that his presence was not desired al Ascot meetings on and after January 1. The ban applies only to Ascot, lull il is .understood that I lie position will be discussed by Ihe eommlllee of the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club al ils next meeting. Similar action was taken by the Q.T.G. against another prominent racegoer about 15 months ago.

Left Again. The two-year-old Fairfax gave further evidence of her bad barrier manners when she was l,eft at the post in the Nursery Handioap on Boxing Day at Ellerslie. This was the third occasion on end when she had similarly behaved and she will need to overcome her unreliability In this connection before, she oan appeal as a likely subject for investment. She has speed enough as she showed at Avondale on the first day.

Chances Extinguished. ' The Auckland Cup of 1934 was marred by interference to the first and second favourites, Kiltowyn and Mintage, and the moderately supported Southdown. The first named pair were racing prominently at the time and while it was too early in proceedings to definitely ascertain whether they would have had a say in the finish 'the immediate track preparation and -past performances of the pair indicated that ’they would have a say in the decision.

Cup Form Justified. The New 'Zealand Cup form of 'Cold Trail was borne out in the Auckland 'Cup when assisted .by a great run through on the rails she won decisively from King March. Always handily placed in, the running shq was the second of the progeny of Chief Ruler to annex Cup honours. Admiral Drake having prevailed in this event in 1931. While their will always be a certain amount of detraction ■from the merit of Cold Trail’s performance owing to the interference met with by Kiltowyn, Vintage and Southdown, her success was well achieved and with superb fitness on ■her side she should add further to her success at the meeting.
