COUNTRY WEEK. PUKEKOHE STILL LEADING. AUCKLAND, Saturday. The Country Week cricket tournament for the llellaby Shield was continued yesterday under excellent weather conditions. Five centuries were scored, the best innings being that of E. Dunning (North Auckland), who compiled 1.50 in 95 minutes. M. Clark (South Auckland) made 139 not out. N. Vipond (North'Auckland) was unbeaten with 121. Thirteen fours were hit by IP. Ilowden (Pukekohe)/ in making 113. E. York (Waipa) relired unbeaten with 110 scored in an hour and a-quarter. The best bowling performances were recorded by P. Howden (Pukekohe), four wickets for 26 runs, P. Dow (Poverty 'Bay), four for 38. Points to date are as follows: — Pukekohe, 1.4; Poverty Bay, 9; North Auckland, 8; Waipa, 4; South Auckland, 3. South Auckland v. Pukekohe. South Auckland compiled 238 against Pukekohe. W. Wilson and At. Clark gave sound exhibitions, Clark in particular scoring with powerful shots at a fast pace. Pukekohe went after the runs from the outset, and P. Ilowden gave a sterling display to score 113, his hook shots and leg glances, from which he scored many boundaries, being executed with precision. His partnership with Hewitt added 125. Another good partnership was that of C. Lawrie (21 not out) and C. Stoupe (45). Stoupe scored the winning hit with one of his unorthodox shots to the leg boundary at a-quarter to six. North Auckland v. Waipa. North Auckland endeavoured to gain an outright win by sending Waipa in to bat. Waipa went after the runs from the start and L. Dalton scored a fast 71 with vigorous shots all round the wicket. The association of W. Shepherd (55) and E. York, who retired with 110, produced some very fast scoring, 100 runs being added in exactly an hour. Neither batsman was troubled by bowling changes and drove and hooked with apparent ease. N. McMahon (46 not out) and A. Shepherd (29) were also associated in a partnership that took 101 l of the tired attack. With six wickets down, Waipa declared for 360. Vipond and Dunning followed the lead of the Waipa hitlers and, in fact, excelled (he previous display. The partnership yielded 227 and provided one of 11 1 0 finest displays of hard hitting seen at Eden Park for a long time. At no lime did the bowlers look like taking wickets. Dunning was well caught on the boundary when making a big hit. Wyatt, also had a merry innings of 38 not out. Howard, representing the New Zealand Cricket Council, conferred with the board and reopened Hie case for sending a representative Australian team to the Dominion. A member of the hoard subsequently submitted a motion to rescind the on? carried at a former meeting rejecting a similar proposal. This also was defeated, so there will he no New Zealand tour.
