DISTRICT NEWS.

KAIPAKI. CHURCH SERVICE. At the Anglican service on Sunday afternoon the Rev. c. W. Chandler, the newlyinducted Vicar of Cambridge, officiated. There was a good congregation. Miss Jackson, of Cambridge,’presided at the organ. Prize-Giving and Entertainment. Awaited with keen anticipation by the children or the Kalpaki Sunday School, the annual prize-giving and entertainment took place on Thursday evening. There was a record attendance or parents and rrlends, and a very happy evening was passed. The following Items were given by the children:—Pianoforte duet, Jean Soft and Valerie McEldowney; recitation, Marion Cunningham; piano solo, Elva Boyd; mandolin guitar solo, Roy Cunningham; dialogue (live juniors), Doris Weal, Mervyn Garmonsway, John Lynds, Brian Tarr and Phil McEldowney; instrumental duet, Ray and Mervyn Garmonsway; two carols by the children.

Mrs A. Goodwin, the. school’s superintendent, then read a very satisfactory report and balance-sheet. Prizes and certificates won during the year were presented to the scholars by the Rev. A. McLean (Cambridge), who first congratulated Mrs Goodwin upon the fine work of the school and wished It sucEadh scholar received a reward book, and special prizes for proficiency In religious knowledge were won by Jessie Steenson, Joan Cowle, James Sexton, Keith McEldowney, and Wallace Scott. The following children received a diploma for perfect attendance: James Sexton, Leslie Harvey, Valerie McEldowney, Ruth Harvey, Jean Scott, Keith , McEldowney, Henry Willoughby, Fred Willoughby, James Cowle, Joy King, Brian Tarr, Beryl Cowle, Marlon Cunningham, Wallace Scott, Peter Cunningham, Noeline Fisher, Harold Harvey. Opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mrs Goodwin, a senior scholar, Joy King, asking her to accept a handbag as a token or the children’s love and appreciation., Mrs Goodwin, who was greeted with applause, thanked the donors. Father Christmas (Colin Fisher) then appeared with his beautifully decorated sleigh, loaded with balloons and toys for the little ones. He was accompanied by tnree fairies (Esther Boyd, Noeline Fisher and Bernice Cowle) and a little Father Christmas (Mervyn Garmonsway), who helped to distribute the toys. The second hair or the programme consisted or two plays, staged by the seniors. In the first, entitled “The New Maid,” the characters were taken by Sheila McDonald, Leslie Harvey, Jean Scott, Jim sexton, Joan Cowle and Murray Boyd. In the second play, “The Lady Doctor,’’ the parts were taken by Mrs Goodwin, Jessie Steenson, Joy King, Eileen Searle, Valerie McEldowney, Ina Farrell and Beryl Cowle. The finale was a spectacular tableaux.

ALEXANDRA RACING CLUB. The Alexandra Racing Club held Its seventieth anniversary on Boxing Day. There was a record number or acceptances for the races, which were held at Plrongla. In the evening a ball was held and proved a fitting conclusion to the anniversary celebrations. There was an attendance of upwards of live hundred people, and the function proved most enjoyable. Mr Phil Swirt’s Orchestra from Te Kultl was engaged and the duties of M.’sC. were carried out by Mr Gordon Bainbrldge and Mr A. Chappell. The School.

At the conclusion or the school year very satisfactory reports of the school examinations were received. The largest crowds yet seen In Otorohanga on Christmas Eve patrolled the streets last Monday evening. The shopkeepers were kept very busy; Degree Examinations. Among the passes in the degree examinations conducted by the University of New Zealand In professional accountancy are Mrs C. E. 11. Quin and Captain M. C. Falrbrother, or Apia, Western Samoa, both or whose parents are old residents of Olorohanga. Mr Quin has resided in the South Seas for the past live years and is acting as assistant secretary to the Administration or Samoa, whilst Captain Falrbrother is aiac-de-campe to the Administrator, BrigadierGeneral, Hart.
