SUMMER CARNIVAL. HUGE CROWDS AT EPSOM. ROI L’OR WINS RIO'YAL CUP. AKARANA TO WAR GIRL. The Summer Carnival of the Auckland Trotting Club was opened at Epsom yesterday in brilliantly fine •weather, the attendance being the largest seen at a trotting meeting in Auckland for many years. The racing surface was fast and in excellent order and many exciting contests were witnessed. Only three favourites won during the day while the publics choice was second on one occasion and third on two occasions. The meeting opened with the Selby Handicap, the favourite Ganton winning by a length and a-quarter from the second fancy Matunga. second event the December Handicap was won by the fourth fancy Aircraft with the sixth fancy Gold Dredge half a length, away- Sure justified the support accorded him in the Grandstand Handicap by defeating the fourth favourite Francis Lincoln by two lengths. . „ The Auckland Royal Trotting Cup was an exciting contest with the sixth fancy Roi L’Or winning nicely by three-parts of a length from the second choice Worthy Light with Blue Mountain third in 'demand half a length away. Impromptu ran well and was only a neck behind the placed horses. The favourite Indianapolis carried over £2OOO but dwelt at the start and coul'd not catch the leaders. Roi L Oi s time of 4.15 2-5 for the two miles was a world’s reoord for the distance. The Christmas Handicap resulted in a win for 'the second fancy Mocast who beat the third fancy Bingen Chief by one and a-quarter lengths. Concluding results are as follows:

I Silver Watch galloped at the start and lost a lot of ground, Peter Junior leading out from Kewple’s Bond, Fisher and Prince Etawah. Passing the stands Peter Junior was making play from Kewplejs Bond and Fisher, with Compass, Subsidy', Prince Etawah, War Girl and Mazda lrr that order. Along tho back the leading trio wore followed by Subsidy, Compass, War Girl, Red Hope and Prince Etawah. There was little alteration across the top, Peter Junior turning for home ahead of Fisher, War Girl and Subsidy. In a good finish War Girl came through to beat Subsidy narrowly by a head, with Fisher two lengths away third. Peter Junior was fourth, and then came Silver Watch, Prlnco Etawah and Compass. Smooger and Homeward were on terms crossing the top in front or Jackie Thorpe and Colonial Boy, and Homeward showed the svay Into the straight to Jackie Thorpe, Smooger and Great Parrish. Great Parrish, finishing fast, did best In the run home to bent Colonial Bov by a length and a hair, with Jackie Thorpe half a length away.
