• Wonderful chaps, those scientists! Cabled the other day that: “The old question ‘why is smoking pleasurable’ has now been placed on a scientific basis, and there is a rational explanation of why tobacco relieves fatigue and irritability.” Further particulars will be awaited with breathless interest. Meantime the man in the street will probably go on smoking because he likes it, without worrying over scientific reasons. But does the weed invariably "relieve fatigue and irritability”? Aha, “that’s another story,” as Kipling would say. If full of nicotine it assuredly doesn’t. Instead it has precisely the opposite effect. The safe and sure way is to stick to “Toasted New Zealand.” Not only is it of the finest quality, but the toasting it gets at the factory (expert treatment!) largely eliminates the nicotine. Five popular brands: Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cut Plug NO. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish, Desert Gold and Riverhead Gold. Both the latter make splendid cigarettes. All these do really banish fatigue and irritability. But take care when you buy—or you may get a rotten imitation. 462
