DESTRUCTIVE FIRES
GLADSTONE HOTEL BURNED. ONLY FEW CLOTHES SAVED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) / MASTEUTON, Thursday. The Gladstone Hotel, an old wooden two-storeyed building of 18 rooms, was destroyed by lire this afternoon. The fire was discovered in a hoarder’s room upstairs and the proprietor, Mr H. S. King, with assistance, extinguished all visible- signs of the outbreak and proceeded with the milking. 11 was then discovered that the lire had broken out again and this time the room was v a mass ol' llunCs. The building, which was built of tolara and was as dry as Under, was soon demolished. The hotel was owned by’ Mr King. Nothing was saved, except a few clotlies. The wooden bridge over the Ruamahanga River was threatened by the llames, which quickly travelled through the dry grass, igniting one end of the bridge. A party of 20 Maoris succeeded in saving it from serious damage.
OUTBREAK AT MARSDEN. DAMAGE TO SAWMILL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GREYMUIiTH, Thursday. A spark from n bush lire caused £SOO damage to the sawmilling properly of Stratford, Blair and Company, near Mnrsden, at i p.m. 10-day. A slack of iOOO silver pine sleepers was destroyed, also a bush locomotive and engine sited. No water was available.
