NEW ZEALAND CONGRESS. PLAY IN FIRST ROUND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The New Zealand Chess Congress opened to-day. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr .1. K. Archer, welcomed the visitors. 'There arc 18 entries. Results of the first round were: — Fribers drew with Abbott, Netting heat Cray, Sevcrne drew with Beyer, Watt beat Hicks, Gyles beat Fairbairn, Dunlop heat Dyer, Armstrong drew with Lc Petit. The games between Erskinc and Scott and Hardy and Darwin were adjourned.
