HAPPY TIME SPENT. A very happy time was spent by the large crowd present at the Toorak Hall on Friday evening, the 21st inst., the occasion being the annual social and 'Christmas tree, organised by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Unemployed Workers’ 'Movement. An apology for absence was received from Ibe Hon. A. J. Young, Member for Hamilton, owing to duties in connection with the Royal tour. The Mayor, Mr J. R. 'Fow, briefly addressed the gathering and amused all present with a humorous recitation. Air Fow was heartily cheered at Hie conclusion of his address. Dances and games were the order of the evening and some splendid items were contributed. Little Colleen Loughlin, a pupil of Aliss I. Brooke, gave a clever tap dance. Air Taylor was popular with his ventriloquist item and kept Hie children well amused. Joyce Jarvis sang and Lorna Bridges recited. Amusing items were contributed by Air Burgess (musical saw). Air W. Wisliart (lap dancer) and Air J. Kilburn (moulb organ solos).' Airs Whatu's parly gave two much appreciated Maori Herns. The arrival of Santa Glaus was hailed with cheers and each child received n presenl from the Gliristmas tree. Supper followed Hie distribution of the gifts and dancing was resumed lill a late hour by llie adults. Al I lie request of the M's. G.. Air J. Snookes and Air 'll. Crawford, cheers were given for all whose efforls and assistance had made the function a success. AH's Collins replied briefly on behalf of the Women's Auxiliary. Air Snookes and Air Crawford were accorded a very hearty vole of (banks. The sales table was in charge of Alcsdames Sparkes and Bravo. Tha winners of the dances were:—

Monte Carlo, Joy 'Cook and 'Daphne Cook, Lory Snowline and Joy Snowline; Lucky Spot, Violet Davis and Jan Warren; 'Statue Dance, Eunice Woodham and Gwen Miller; Monte Carlo, Eddie Yates and Edgar Warren; spot waltz, Joan Crowhurst and Gordon Nisbel; lucky door tickets, Mr and Mrs Fitzpatrick, Master Yates, Miss Joyce Harris; euchre, Mrs Lord and Mr Work; game, tMessie Chennel, Dorry 'Harrison; adults’ Monte Carlo, -Miss P. McLachlan and 'Mr Harris; lucky spot, Mr and Miss Collins. The Christmas cake was won by Des Miller, the doll by Mrs Edmonds, and the salad set by Mrs Mac'Lachlnn. The pottery donated by Mr Bridges was won by Mr H. Crawford and Mr Young.

The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
