THE AUCKLAND CLUB. SUMMER MEETING OPENED. legatee scores in foal stakes. GOLD TRAIL’S CUP SUCCESS. STEEPLECHASE TO ABSENT. GAY BLONDE WINS RAILWAY. (Times Special Reporter.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. jFavoureidi with perfect racing conditions, the Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival was successfully Inaugurated (jo-day. The weather was ideal, and the largest crowd seen - at Ellerslie for many years witnessed racing of a highly interesting order. Among those present was His Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester, who was given a Warm welcome by the crowd on his arrival ion the course shortly after the .first race. The programme opened with the Queen's Plate, in which the favourite, Kelly, and Lady Kyra fought - a keen race to a dead-heat.

The Great Northern Foal Stakes saw the third fancy Legatee prevail in con- , vinclng fashion over the favourite Galilee, who narrowly beat Haut Monde into third place. Matorni was only a head in front of Coronis, who was ooupled with the Hamilton-owned Lionheart, at the conclusion of the Robinson Handicap, with Hunting Bag third. The big event, the Auckland Cup, ■was contested by the good Held of 12, the verdict going to the Hawke’s Bay candidate, Gold Trail, from King March and Grand Jury. Fourteen steeplechasers appeared for Ihe Gloucester Steeplechase, Absent jumping consistently to score * by a neck over Thespis, but beat Wee Pat toy half a length. The course record was equalled by Gay Blonde in winning the Railway Handicap, the sixth race on the programme. Heads only separated the placed division, Gay Seton’ and Dia-, tomous toeing second and third. Lady Ruler won the Nursery Handif cap from the favourite Bun Fight, and Parquet.

The day’s racing concluded with the Christmas Handicap, in which there were nine defeclions from .the card of 23 acceptors, "rhe favourite, Princess Doreen, was successful by a narrow margin over Golden Wings, with Cricket Bat the closest of the others. The totalisalor showed an increase of £0059 compared with the figures 'for opening day last year. The concluding results were as follows:

Dtatomous was a first ravourtte with £2005 10s, Silver Jubilee carrying- £1207, Gay Blonde- £ 12G2 10s, and Gay Seton £428 1 os.

Diatomous and Silver Jubilee were the first to break the line, showing- out early from Cranford, Rereatu and Star Artist. •Jiy the time the top was reached Gay Seton had moved up smartly to the front, and was In charge Trom Gay Blonde, Diatomous, Sinking Fund, Rereatu, Grand Sport and'Silver Jubilee. Gay Seton led the field at the turn, where Diatomous was close on Ills heels. In rront of’ Gay Blonde, Sinking Fund, Rereatu, Grand Sport and Namakia. In a tight Ilnlsh Gay Blonde caught the Te Rapa horse on the post to get the verdict by a head, Diatomous being a similar distance away, third. ■Silver Jubille was fourth, in rront of Bereatu, Sinking Fund, Namakia, British Columbia, Sporting Blood, Gaysome and Imamlnt. The winner’s time, 1.1 l 3-5, was a race record, and equalled the track record established by Jonathan at the Easter meeting.

Gay Blonde’s performance was an Impressive one, as she drew number 14 position, and had to cover extra ground as a result.» She was capably handled by A. Tinker. Gay Seton ran ills best race to date, falling only In the last little bit. 110 Is In great condition, and should win at the meeting. Dlatomous made a solid showing as also did Silver Jubilee. In a tight llnlsh Lady Ruler hung on to win by a neck from Bun Fight, who beat Parquet by a head. Kotou was fourth. Going Gay next, anfl. Triune, Round Up, Flood Tide, Palardo, Light Comedy and Tldalia In that order. Time, 1.0 1-5.

Lady Ruler made a nne Impression and was sticking to her task well at the end. Bun Fight will no doubt be seen to better advantage later In the meeting. Parquet was finishing on well and should improve.

Following an inquiry Into interference In the Cup, Voitre was suspended for a month for Interference near< the five-fur-long post, 'and Wiggins, for Interference near the seven-furlong post, was similarly dealt with.
