Face In a Stono. —A remarkable effect in the. composition (if the stone placed in the Lyttelton railway yards recently lo commemorate Hie landing of the llust of the Ganlerbury pilgrims from Hie Chariot,lc .lane 84 years ago, was nolie,rd by a number of those present at the unveiling ceremony. On one side of the stone there is an inscription, but in the stone on Hie reverse strte appears a striking outline of a face., bearing a resemblance to a Maori or an Indian. There is a clearcut forehead, the cheeks have been trimmed away, revealing a nose in profile, and a mouth and chin arc submerged In the stone. Those who saw the face considered it to lie a slrange natural effect, although it was ■thought that the stonemasons may ■have noticed the resemblance arid have accentuated it.
