THE AUCKLAND CLUB. SUMMER CARNIVAL OPENED. DEAD HEAT IN QUEEN’S PLATE. FOAL STAKES TO LEGATEE. GOLD TRAIL LEADS CUP FIELD. (Times Special Reporter-) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. With the largest, 'crowd seen at Ellerslie for many years in attendance, and in ideal weather, the Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival was introduced to-day. The track was in perfect condition, and the racing was of an interesting order. A rousing reception was tendered by the crowd to His Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester, who arrived shortly after the first race. Following are the results: — QUEEN’S PLATE. Winners trained by F. Gilchrist, E-ller-slie, and W. F. Mantle, New Plymouth, Kelly tvas a firm fancy with £2705, from Lady Kyra, who carried £1444 10s, and King Musk, who had £045 invested on his chances.

Lady Kyra, Scotland and Kelly were prominent early and as they raced along the back Scotluud bad run to the front from Kelly and Lady Kyra, Royal Dash, The Khedive, Cherry King, King Musk, Respectful, Scarox, Lagoon and Final Shot. Kelly drifted somewhat as the field negotiated the top, where King 'Musk had run up behind Scotland and Lady Kyra with Lagoon, Cherry King, Respectrul and Kelly in that order. Scotland and King Musk were practically on terms as the field swung for home, with Lagoon and Respectful, Lady Kyra, Cherry King, Kelly, Seafox, Final Shot and Royal Dash racing as named. In a fine finish, Lady Kyra came fast to pass the post on terms with Kelly, with Scotland a length away. Seafox was fourth and then came King Musk, I.agoon, Final Shot, Cherry King, Respectful, Royal Dash and The Khedive. Time, 1.38 4-5. Kelly looked to have the. Issue in sare keeping at the distance, when Lady Kyra canto with a rattle to make a dead heat of It. Scotland endeavoured to win all, the way, hut failed in the final hit. The ravourite Galilee was backed down to a short price with £23 19 10s, Haul Monde, the second Taney carrying £2291 10s and the Legatee—'Symcony bracket, £IB4B 10s. Fairfax was loft at the start and took no part in the race. Gay Sheik was the first to show out and led over the early stages from Legatee, Penelope and Debliarn. Symcony soon ran to tlie front and across the top was bowling along in rront or Galilee, Haut Monde, Gay Sheik, Debham, Penelope, Legatee and Hunting Scene with Happy Landing bringing up the rear. Symcony was two lengths clear of Galilee as they turned for home with Haut Monde handy and Gay Sheik following in rront of Debham, 'Legatee and Penelope. Legatee, on tlie rails, got up to win comfortably by three lengths at the finish, from Galilee, who beat Haut Monde by a neck. Debham was fourth in front or Penelope, Gay Sheik, Symcony, Hunting Scene and Happy Landing. Time, 1.13 1-5.

The winner, assisted by a nice run on the rails, nnished on too solidly for the opposition. Galilee looked likely at the distance, hut had no chance with the winner at the end. Ilaut Monde gave a solid performance, but Symcony, after making the pace practically throughout, faded right away at the finish.
