BRIGHT CRICKET.

MATCH AT SEDDON PARK \ AUCKLAND TEAM FAIL. CLOUGH’S BRIGHT DISPLAY. 'HAWKE’S ATTRACTIVE BATTING. Cricket of a bright and interesting order was witnessed at Seddon Park yesterday, tvlten a two-day's ma c. between an Auckland eleven, and South Auckland representatives was commenced in perfect weather. The teams are — South Auckland—A. J. Aitken (captain), N. Winger, 0. McKenzie, s. A. 11. Badeley, A. Lissette, R. Skeet, p. Jordan, .R. Clough, E. L. Avery, E. Everest, H. Going. . , Auckland' —S. C. Hay (captain), A. W. McCoy, H. Stephenson, R. S. Cleave, D." Hawke, W. Johnson, A. L. Flyger, F. M. Andrews, N. Dixon, W, S. Smith, F. G. Goodsir. Aitken, winning the toss, elected to bat on a fast wicket with the outfield in splendid order. Winger and McKenzie opened to the bowling of Goodsir and Hawke. Winger gained a single off ’Goodsir’s over, but was clean bowled by Hawke with his first ball. Badeley and McKenzie by steady batting took the score to 39, when Hawke took a splendid left-handed catch low down in the slips to dismiss McKenzie. Lissette did not stay long, and three wickets were down for 44 i’.uns. '

Wickets Fall Quiokly. A fine stand by Badeley' and Skeet snowed promise, but both were out shortly afterwards, and five wickets were down for 67 runs. The cricket was bright, there being no maiden overs until the 19th over. The sixth wicket partnership by Jordan and Clough added 111 runs in quick time, Clough scoring twice as fast as his partner. Jordan was slow but steady, and he surprised the crowd by hitting a beautiful six in the same over as Clough collected two in succession from Andrews. Clough was first to go, after ah attractive innings, Jordan following 11 runs later. Going could not get going, nor could Avery, but Aitken and Everest added 41 for the'last widket in good style, Aitken being well caught in the outfield. The score of 242 was a good one after a mediocre start.

The bowling was of a high order, Andrews often having the batsmen in trouble. Goodsir and McCoy also bowled well.

The Visitors Collapse.

Auckland collapsed badly In their first innings. McCoY was well beaten by Going when the score was only 6, while two runs later Going also beat Stephenson. Cleave was foolishly run out before he had scored, and three wickets were down for 10 runs. Hawke commenced promisingly, but at 35 he lost Hay, who had opened. Johnson stayed some time, but was splendidly caught In the slips by Lissette before he had opened his account. Hawke, batting very attractively, was piling on the runs, but was bowled by Winger in his next over. The remaining batsmen could make no impression on the bowling and the ' side was dismissed for 97 runs. Badeley bowled very well without luck, while Going was also in fine form, bowling 15 overs. The best average, however, was secured by Winger, who bowled four overs, taking threo wickets for 7 runs, including a great ’drive by Andrews for four. Following on, the visitors opened with Hawke and Hay,- to the bowling of Everest and Badeley. The bowlers were again on top, Everest beating Ilawke with a beautiful ball, the batsman opening ills shoulders for a drive. At 21 McCoy was out leg before, and Hay and Cleave hung oil until stumps, when two wickets were down for 30 tuns.

TO-QAY’S PLAY.

AUCKLAND DEFEATED. ' ] MARGIN OF TEN WICKETS. \ With 116 lo make to save an inn- * ings defeat Hay and Cleave pluyed l carefully to, the howling of Badeley j and Everest when the game was re- j srimed to-day in fine weather. At 41 Cleave, who had shown some nice j shots, placed his leg in front of a straight ono from Badeley. This was an unfortunate start, as great things were expected of this partnership. Ilay touched one from f Everest two runs later, Sheet holding > the catch. Johnson and Stephenson 5 were cautious, but four runs later 1 Sheet accepted another catch off Everest t o 'dismiss Johnson, and the score- , hoard read 475 —1. Stephenson and Flygcr were then associated in a steady partnership, both batsmen displaying nice shots. When they had added 44 Stephenson had a hit at Altkcn and was beautifully caught low down at point by Avery. Andrews, who followed, was caught behind off Aitken. Dixon and Flyger kept the score moving, Flygcr bringing up the century with a splendid cover drive to the boundary. This pair kept the bowlers at bay for a long spell, but ovenlually Flygor stepped out to Badeley, slipped and was stumped. Flyger, who topscored, batted very patiently', scoring with pretty shots from the loose balls. Smith did not stay long, but Goodslr and Dixon gained the reriuired number of runs to save an innings defeat, but Dixon was bowled by Clough soon after, leaving South Auckland six to make to win. Going and Avery went in and Going lifted the second ball from Godoslr out of the ground, giving South Auckland the victory by 10 wickets. Details; Details*— SOUTH AUCKLAND—First Inninss. N.
