FATAL INJURIES

RAILWAY ACCIDENT MR. A. J. MEADE SUCCUMBS. SECOND VICTIM’S CONDITION. As the result of severe Injuries received when a motor jigger .on which he was riding with another raihvay officer was overtaken and wrecked by a train near Taupiri, last Tuesday evening, the death occurred in the Waikato Hospital on Saturday evening of Mr. A. J. Meade. Deceased who was 58 years of age, was Inspector of Parmanent Way at Frankton Junction. When struck by the train on Tuesday he suffered grave head injuries, and was admitted to hospital in a critical condition. His companion, Mr. H. W. Beasley, district engineer, of Auckland, sustained concussion, but is making good progres's. Deceased and Mr. Beasley were inspecting the line in preparation for the Duke of Gloucester’s visit to Auckland, and were travelling from Frankton to Mercer when the accident occurred. Inquest Opened. An inquest was opened before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., coroner, yesterday morning, and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. Mr. Meade was born in Melbourne and joined the New Zealand railways at Lawrenceton, Canterbury, about 30 years ago. He was stationed at Lyttelton and Avoca, and for eleven years was a ganger at Sheffield. Mr Meade was then transferred to Addington and later took charge of the Christchurch railway yards. •He was then appointed Inspector of Permanent Way at Springfield, and two months ago was transferred to Frankton Junction.
