GERMAN THREAT.
SYNTHETIC WOOL. NO SERIOUS 'CHALLENGE. VIEWS OF PASTORALISTS. i t ; (From a Correspondent). SYDNEY, November 14. Wool authorities in Sydney, to-day, referring to the warning of the German Consul-General, Dr. Asmls, regarding the German artificial wool — woMstra, expressed the opinion that the natural raw product Was not likely to be seriously affected by the synthetic production. Mr A. ik. Trethowan, managing director of the 'Farmers and Graziers' 'Co-operative Company, said that he had seen the material which was very nice to look' at, “but I should say its wearing quality Is doubtful. It may be all right as a substitute for wool for purely local German consumption, but I don’t think that it can effectively challenge pure wool,” he said.
The president of the Graziers’ Association, Mr James Walker, said that every few, years a scare had been created over the so-called wool-sub-stitute. Nevertheless, it was worthy of note that the record wool production in Ihe past few years had gone qipekly into consumption. Mr Walker admitted Germany’s case for trade, as presented by Dr. Asmis, and said, obviously reciprocal trade agreements with all our big customer countries has become vital to Australia."
The secretary of the Graziers’ Association (Mr Allen) said representations weer made to the Commonwealth Government a month ago in regard to facilitating trade between countries which had hitherto been largely buyers of Australian wool, but had been restricted by the existing finance, and trade conditions. Most of those countries, he said, had been asking Australia to buy from them, Japan, for example, had become a much bigger buyer of wool in Australia than Germany, and desired to increase her exports to Australia.
