SUBURBAN ASSOCIATION. THE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. LATEST tPLAY REVIEWED. (By "Umpire.”) Although the weather was threatening early in the afternoon, conditions ruled fine and favourable for the second round of the Suburban Association's championship matches on Saturday. 'St. Peter’s No. 1 visited Fairfield and scored Jo sets to the home team’s 5. The visitors fared best in the doubles, although Fairfield ran several games to a close finish. Tattley and Miss H. Casey defeated Mc'Gullagh and Mrs Sloane, 7— j 6, in a game which seemed at one stage, almost certain to be won by St. Peters’ pair, were leading then, 6 —3. The singles were all fairly evenly contested. The St. Peter’s top lady, Miss 'B. Aitken, turned the tables on the Fairfield ladder leader, Miss E. Casey, who had beaten her in a previous meeting.

East and Rototuna. The Hamilton East and Rototuna teams tried conclusions on the East courts, the home team prevailing, by I'3 sets to 8. East had the better of things In tho doubles, but Rototuna had more success in the singles, especially in the ladies’ games. D. 'Bruce, top man for Rototuna, defeated Boyd, 7—3 while Miss Braggins, the East top lady, accounted for Miss K. Clements, 6—o. Misses M. D. and G. Clements all won their singles for Rototuna.

Unity Ladles Impress. Unity were matched against St. Mary’s, at home, winning- fairly comfortably by 16 sets to '5. Broderick and Langdon played a very good game to defeat Stubbs and Dempster 7—G, in -the men’s doubles. The second and third doubles, however, went to Unity. Unity ladies’ team again proved they are a solid combination, winning all three ladles’ doubles, only three games being scored against them in the three matches. In the combined doubles Broderick Partnered with Miss •Saunders, again proved to be much of a proposition for Stubbs and 'Miss Amy Dempster, winning 7 —The other live combines were won by Unity. In the ladies’ singles Miss L. Webster defeated Miss Saunders, 6— 2. although Miss Saunders gave a good account of herself against the second representative lady. Miss t.ox was defeated by Miss lv. A Ruakura Surprise. Playing on the Ruakura courts, Dairy defeated Ruakura by I's sets to 9. A surprise was the defeat of Miss ‘P. Woolford, Dairy top lady player for Dairy, by Miss G. Howlett. Miss Woolford evidently could not accustom herself to the courts after playing on grass. However, Miss Howlett can always be relied on to give ail comers a good game and on her.play deserved her win over Miss Woolford.

A Close Finish. The decision was in doubt until the final stages of the Railway and Hamilton East Presbyterian match, Railway gelling the verdict by 10 sets to S; although their opponents ' led on games. Both teams played good tennis all the way, and honours were even in most divisions. Craig and Simpson, tho top men, had a keen tussle, from which Craig emerged successful, 7 —4. Miss R. Kilham went down to Miss Cl. St. George, Presbyterian top lady, 6—3. WAIKATO EAST CLUB.
