America’s Cup

FIRST RACE RESULT. / WIN FOR BRITISH YACHT. MARGIN OF 2 MIN. 11 SECONDS. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received Sept. 18, 8.20 a.m.) VANCOUVER, Sept. 17. In the second race for the America’s Cup (Hie first being abortive), the Endeavour won by a margin of 131 seconds. I The British yacht showed her superiority on the run home. The race was delayed for ten minutes as the Endeavour fouled her mainsail and was given a short postponement. The Rainbow was away l\vo seconds ahead of the Endeavour, which had to luff to clear the committee boat and lost way. While tiie breeze seldom reached eight knots on Saturday, to-day the yachts raced into a sixteen knot wind ■ that fell somewhat, but freshened again to thirteen knots. To-morrow tiie vessels will race over a triangular eourse. Endeavour’s Sailing Qualities. After a poor start, which caused her to trail by 21 seconds to the windward mark, the Endeavour, in demonstrating her fine sailing qualities and the expert seamanship of her skipper and crew, made tiie run home in a spectacular fashion against her obviously fast opponent. The Endeavour’s victory was only the fourth British triumph in 41 races in 15 series, covering a period of 84 years. Mr Vanderbilt had out-manoeuvred Mr Sopwith on the 15-mile windward leg of the 30-mile course, but with the wind astern the Britisher began to close tiie gap and almost 28 minutes after passing the first mark went into a short lead, which it consistently iu« creased. PREVIOUS RACES. There will be a series of seven raced and the cup will be awarded to the first boat to secure four victories. The conditions provide that the remaining races shall be held on the succeeding week days with ohe intervening day of rest if required. The course this year is in Block Sound, off Newport, with the starting* and finishing lines nine miles south-east of Brenton Reef Lightship. In 1930 this was proved, a much better course than the old one off Sandy Hook as there is much less traffic, the tides are not so tricky, ( the winds are steadier and there is a safer haven with-deeper water. The races will be alternating onss, the first being 15 miles to windward and leeward and the second round an equilateral triangle of approximately 10 miles each side. To\orevent any possibility of a race developing into a drifting match the winning yacht must complete the course within five and a-half hours. The America’s Gup was originally named the Queen’s Cup and was offered by the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1851. In 1857 it was won by an American yacht and has since been called the America’s Gup. Lord Dunraven and Sir Thomas Lipton built yachts to endeavour to lift it, but the handicap of crossing the Atlantic (one of the conditions imposed upon the challenger, has proved too great for the challenger in all previous contests, tiie results of races since 1895 being:— October 16, 1899, Columbia (U.S.A.)! beat Shamrock I. (Br.) by 10 min. 8 sec. October 17, 1899, Columbia (U.S.A.)' had walk over, Shamrock (Br.), being disabled. October 20, 1899, Columbia (U.S.A.)' beat Shamrock (Br.), by 0 min. 34 seo.
