HIGHWAYS BOARD.

SEAT FOR OFFICIAL. ALLEGED BROKEN PROMISE. (Times Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Speakiijg in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives this evening, Mr A. E. Ansell (Government —Chalmers) voiced severe criticism of the Government for failing to appoint Mr A. Tyndall, Under-Secre-tary of Mines, to a recent vacancy on the Main Highways Board, although he had a thorough knowledge of roading problems. Mr Ansell said that Air Tyndall for 10 years was engineer to the Main Highways Board and proved a most efficient officer. Before taking up his duties he spent £IOOO of his own money in visiting other countries to study roading problems. He had qualified as solicitor, as engineer, and as accountant. When he was appointed to the position of Under-Sec-retary for Mines, efforts were made to have him retained as engineer to the Highways Board. Mr Ansell said a deputation waited on the Prime Minister asking that Mr Tyndall should he appointed a member of the Highways Board. The Prime Minister agreed and promised to do his best to arrange for such an appointment when an opportunity occurred. The Minister of Mines, the Minister of Transport, and the Minister of Public Works had been approached and had agreed that Mr Tyndall should be appointed to the board. A vacancy occurred but Mr Tyndall was not appointed.
