AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. ■NORTH ISLAND TITLES. TOURNAMENT IN HAMILTON. With entries totalling over fifty, and including leading amateurs from all parts of the island, the preliminary bouts in the North Island amateur wrestling championships were commenced in the Alexandra Hall this afternoon. Conducted under the auspices of the Waikato Wrestling Association the eight title events have attracted a good class of wrestler, and indications point to some great exhibitions of what has 'become a popular sport. In ivew of the large entries, the championship bouts will, of necessity, be continued this Averting and (tomorrow, when the finals will be decided. The entries include sixteen contenders from the Waikato district, who will wrestle elimination bouts this afternoon, the finalists in each class competing for the titles. Several of the finals will be staged as introductory bouts to the professional contest between Dr. Fred Meyers and Walter Browning, who will meet in the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening. All of the bouts were of three fiveminute rounds. The Results. The following are the results of this afternoon’s bouts up to the time of going to press, the contests comprising elimination bouts for the Waikato entrants — Feather-weight.—A. Webb (Hamilton) won from G. Robinson (Pirongla), who was disqualified for having oil on his body. Light-weight.—C. Shannon (Hamilton) beat T. GilCllan (Frankton) by two straight falls, Welter-weight. H. Sorenson (Hamilton) beat N. James (Okoroire) by one fall, secured in the second round. 11. Mueller (Hamilton) beat J. Major (Hamilton), on points. Middleweight.—C. Woolston (Pirongia), beat J. Johansen (Waiuku) by one fall after an extra round. Johansen was the more aggressive wrestler. Light-heavyweight.-—P. Hill (Te Awamutu) beat 0. Barr (Hamilton) on points.
