Then the little man-made village they had left behind them In Llttlo America probably seemed very remote—far off, although memories, no doubt, were still sharply vivid. What had happened at Little America since they had left it rour years berore? What could happen—nothing, perhaps—and then, agalu much could have happened! Snow-covered mounds Indicated their former homes. Familiar things came to sight. Then a general rush to enter. One group dug Its way into the “ Administration Building ” as they call It. Another started to dig Its way Into the weather-room, a small hut attached to the other “ buildings.” Several reet of snow were shovelled away. Three reet of solid Ice still blocked them. This was chopped away. A hole was cut through the roor. They clambered down Into the dark Interior. Instinctively the hand or one of the explorers reached for the electric light switch. Perhaps he meant to click the switch as a joke, but It was no joke. THE LIGHT WENT ONI Someone grabbed the telephone and called the Administration Building nearby. The ’phone bell In that building tinkled there Just as in tho old days. A startled member picked up the ’phone. It was as though they had never lert the place—that they had never been Morth, that it had been a dream during four years of slumber. , This Incident broadcast over the radio to the rest of the world and published In newspapers everywhere brought lnciuirles by tho score. “ now could the lights be turned on arter four years?” people all over the country Inquired.
