Hamilton 1 24 Tauplrl 0 ' HAMILTON BEATEN. WAIPA’S GOOD VICTORY*. GAME AT TE AWAMUTU. VISITORS LACKED COHESION. In view of Hamilton’s Peace Cup ■challenge with Morrlnsville on Saturday next, the match between Hamilton and Walpa, at Te Awamutu last Saturday attracted a good deal of local interest. The Hamilton team never seemed to be able to get going and were defeated by 15 points to 11. Walpa fielded a particularly strong fifteen and starting off well kept up the pressure to gain a well deserved victory . Their forwards were their strongest asest and they pushed Hamilton all over the paddock. The Hamilton team will certainly need one or two alterations, hut it is doubtful if 'Morrlnsville will be as hard as Waipa were. 'Mills replaced L. Denz as half-back for Hamilton, while E. Bell and RJackson were in Waipa’s back-line in place of Oliver and Mate. Waipa had the advantage from the commencement of the game, J. Wynyard and Thompson dribbling the ball down field. Snodgrass picked up smartly and dodgeiji through well, kicking well down field. Pardington came out of the scrunl with the ball and carried play to near Waipa’s goal line. The visitors were awarded a free kick and Allen opened the scoring.—Hamilton 3, Waipa 0. Hamilton was packing down fairly well at this stage and Painton was able to hook the ball but the visiting backs did not get many opportunities as the Waipa forwards were getting on to Mills too smartly. Hassan was prominent on several occasions cutting through and running well, but many times Snodgrass could not collect his pass. When he did he was so well jnarked that he had no room to work in. Shooting the ball out smartly A. Jackson sent the Waipa backs away, M. Bell running running through the five-eighths 'Ciy fast and sending on to Gilbert, but Allen had the centre well marked. Hamilton were penalised in the resulting scrum and M. Bell equalised die scores. —Waipa 3, Hamilton 3. The Lead Increased. Play liad only been in progress for .wo minutes when F. Cassidy broke iway from mid-field and dribbled the jail a good 30 yards. Hall then came in and picking it up near the goal-line passed it back, Snodgrass, coming through fast, collecting the ball and diving over under the posts. Allen again converted. —Hamilton 8, Waipa 8.

Hamilton were having the best of the game at this stage, the backs participating in a good movement. Allen fed Wilson, but the winger could not make progress. Pratt secured and kicked high. He raced down field and caught Gilbert in possession near Waipa’s line. Hall, who was following up well, gained possession and ran a few yards to score an easy try under the posts. The ball rolled as Allen kicked it and the try was not converted. —Hamilton il, Waipa 3., At this stage of proceedings it looked as if Hamilton would put up a big score, but the forwards were not rucking or packing down and Waipa began to push them about. 'F. Cassidy figured in another dash and he transferred to Porteous, but the winger was forced out near the goalline. J. and H. Wynyard, Thompson. Askew and Spence, who were playing great games, bustled the Hamilton team anil play was near Hamilton s line when Waipa were awarded a free kick, M. Bell again converting.— Waipa 0, Hamilton 11. The visitors were overshadowed at this stage of the game, the Waipa team showing far more' combination. Just before half-time A. Jackson worked the blind side with R ~ Jackson, who scored in the corner, Broughton missing the kick, making the scores Waipa 9, Hamilton 11. Walpa Take Lead. Waipa vvere the first to attack on the resumption, but a good movement in which Mills, Ilassan and Snodgrass participated cleared play past the halfway. The Hamilton backs again operated successfully and Allen made a good opening for Wilson who did not reach his objective and Waipa forced their way back to the half-way The play was rather ragged for a spell, weak tackling by the Hamilton backs allowing Waipa to make several promising dashes. Eventually M. Bell kicked through to the corner, E. Bell racing over to score a fine try by diving and beating Pratt and Snodgrass to the ball. Broughton again failed to convert. —Waipa 12, Hamilton R. Jackson intercepted another passing movement by the visiting backs, but was recalled for a knock on. Waipa continued to have the territorial advantage and many more attempts M. Bell again cut through splendidly to feed Gilbert, to E. Bell, who scored another unconverted try, making the scores —Waipa 15, Hamilton 11. Hamilton attempted to retaliate but •lacked cohesion and several promising movements opened by Ilassan failed. Porteous received one good opening from Allen and he shot through like a flash. Snodgrass was outside him when he was tackled, but the fiveeighths was forced out of play. The game was fast and exciting at this stage, both sets of backs attempting to open up the play, the Waipa backs getting more of the ball from their forwards. Waipa were again close , to scoring, but when the final whistle I blew play was in Waipa’s territory. The final score was — Waipa Hamilton H Mr R. L. Adams was the referee. EASY VICTORY. At length the Waipa forwards reached the home twenty-five where Grace had a shot from a penalty, but missed. In another lightning movement by the home backs Comer fed St. George, who made a fast dash and handed on to Barling, who scored easily. Short s kick hit the post, making the half-time score—Hamilton 19, Waipa 0. Hamilton hatiered away at the Waipa defences on resumption, but a good line-kick by Adams, the visiting half, gave them some territory. Comer made a good opening which reversed play. At this stage the referee warned two players for punching. Broderick, receiving from inside, went across in the corner for a good try, which Short failed to convert. After struggling hard, Walpa got well into the opposing territory, B. Walker missing a shot at goal from a free. Barling made another opening soon afterwards and handed to Heeps, who beat two Walpa men to score in the corner. Short failed to convert. The Waipa backs initiated a passing rush with Walker always prominent, hut Miller missed the pass add Beeps intercepted, dashing for home. He was grassed just in time.
