BIG EARTHQUAKE.

SEAT OF THE SHOCKS.

The Riverview Observatory recorded three earthquake shocks, the first at noon yesterday, the second at 3 a.m. to-day, and the third, which was ihe most severe, at 5.40 a.m. The last, shock originated about 1950 miles north-east of Sydney, in. the vicinity of San Cristobal Island, in the Solomons group. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Eight earthquake shocks oi varying intensity were recorded by the seismometer at the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory between yesterday afternoon and this morning. Three of the shocks were classed as local shocks, but these were of quite insignificant magnitude. The other five, which were from varying distances, were of greatly varying intensity. Much the heaviest' shock was recorded at iGmin. 48scc. past 7 o’clock this morning, and it is calculated that its origin must have been 2200 miles from Christchurch. The source is believed to have been in a north-westerly direction, but this cannot be stated definitely. The record was put on the instrument at 4.30 yesterday afternoon and was taken off at 9.30 this morning, and it was between those hours that the eight shocks were suown on the record.

The seismologist at Kew expressed the opinion that the seat of the shocks was close to New Zealand “in fact' the possibility of the shocks havingbeen in New Zealand itself could not be overlooked.” Dr. G. E. Adams, the Dominion seismologist calculates Uiat it was 2000 miles from the Dominion, and added it was difficult to understand how the Kew seismologist came to be so fa" out in his estimate. An earth tremor at Wane-hope, on the north coast, yesterday, is believed to have been associated with the earthquake registered in Sydney and elsewhere. Wauchope residents reported that crockery rooked on the shelves and a number of windows were broken.
