COUNTY COMPETITION.

The county competitions were continued this week. The matches were remarkable for the' big scores recorded. Kent against Essex made the large total of 803 runs for four wickets. On the first day they scored 623 for two wickets. This total was within 22 runs of Surrey’s record days’ score. Ashdown’s 332 is a record for Kent. Kent’s average rate of scoring was 114 per hour. The following are the results: — Warwick v. Middlesex. —Warwick: First innings, 281 (Parsons 101); second, 247. Middlesex: First innings, 225; second, 184 (Paine took five for 71). Warwick won by 119 runs.
Kent v. Essex. —Kent: First innings: 803 for four wickets declared (Ashdciwn 332, Woolley 172, Ames, in, 202). Essex: First, 409 (Pope 100, O’Connor, in, 105); followed on and made 205 (Freeman .took 4 six wickets for 60). K?ent won by an innings and 192 runs.) Sussex v. Somerset. —Sussex: First, 463 for five wickets declared (J Parks 160, Melville 105, James Langridge, in, 88). Somerset: First, 140 (Tate took four wickets for 39); followed on and made 272 (J. Cornford took six wickets for 63). Sussex won by an innings and 51 runs. Northants v. Yorkshire. —Northants: First, 1'53 "(Verity took four wickets for 43); second, 100* (Verity took four wickets for 25). Yorkshire: First, 257 (Partridge took five wickets for 99). Yorkshire won by an Innings and four runs. Lancashire v. Glamorgan.—Lancashire: First, 514 for seven wickets declared (Tyldesley 239, Hopwood 123). Glamorgan: First, 352 (Dyson in, 191)-; followed on and made 148 for four wickets, Lancashire won on the first Innings. Gloucester v. Leicester. —Gloucester: First, 161 (Smith took five wickets for 57 and Geary five for 21); second, 293 (Allen 83, Neale, in, 83; Geary took five wickets for 60). Leicester: First, 326; second, 129 for one wicket. Leicester won by nine wickets. Minor Counties v. Oxford. —Minor Counties: First, 539 for eight wickets declared (Farrimond 174); second, 129 for four wickets. Oxford: First, 469 (Mitchell limes 140, Soamer 194). The match was drawn.
