GERMAN SCHEME.
NOT APPLY TO AUSTRALIA. “To apply In Australia the same principles of restricting agriculture as they are attempting in Germany, and to a lesser extent in America, would lve the height of folly," said Mr A. K. Trethowan, M.L.C., managing director of the Farmers and Graziers’ Co-op. Grain, Insurance and Agency Co., at Sydney. “The scheme outlined may be successful in Germany, where a large Industrial population has to be fed and where they do not depend for their wealth on the export of primary produce,’’ said Mr Trethowan. “But Australia depends almost entirely on the export of produce to meet her overseas commitments. “France and Germany have placed t prohibitive tariff on wheat and guaranteed their producers a fixed price. They are now attempting to restrict I lie production to their own requirements. This may be a good policy for them but it would mean ruin to Australia.”
