On the column is inscribed: “To the long-distance flier, Herbert Hinkler, who fell here on 8.1.X1.” The last figures stand for the eleventh year of the Fascist era. A distinguished assemblage at the unveiling included Colonel Stevens, British military attache at Rome, who, with Mr Pearkes, addressed the assembly, expressing th 6 thanks of the British and Australian Governments, also of the late flyer’s family. Two aeroplanes from the Arezzo airport circled overhead during the ceremony. Colonel Stevens and Mr Pearkes visited the Fascist home at Strada where the propeller of Mr Hinkler’s machine Is preserved. They spoke at length to the charcoal burners who first discovered the wrecked machine, four months after the crash.
