BRIDGE AFTERNOON. Mrs L. Dunn was hostess at her home in Sloane Street at a delightful bridge afternoon for Mrs Melville Newton, of Palmerston South. The drawing-room Avas tastefully decorated with spring flowers, and an enjoyable afternoon’s play resulted. Mrs Dunn received her guests in a frock of black moire and lace, Avhile Mrs Newton wore floral crepe de chine. The highest score was Avon by Mrs W. MacKenzie and the hidden number by Mrs M. Newton. Among those present Avere: —Mesdames Downes, Oliphant, J. McGovern, L. G. Armstrong, Dawson, G. Teasdale, D. Kay, de L. Peake, Rainey. C. Reilly, W. MacKenzie, Pollard, Hawkins, Misses S. Empson, G. Irwin, J. Elliot. SURPRISE PARTY. About thirty friends Avere present at a surprise party to Mrs Melville Newton which was held at Mrs Downes’ residence this week. Seven tables of bridge were held, Mr G. G. Downes accounting for the highest score. Mrs Downes wore a black floral georgette, while Mrs Newtpn was in autumn shaded floral georgette. During the evening a presentation of a picture was made to Mrs Downes, whilst Mrs Newton was the recipient of a dainty necklace. Mr Downes suitably acknowledged the gifts on behalf of Mrs Downes and Mrs Newton. A tasty supper was served, and later a very jolly “real surprise’’ evening broke up Avitli the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.’’ ST. JOHN’S GIRLS’ CLUB. Miss S. V. Empson presided over the fortnightly meeting of the St. John’s Girls’ Club, held in the club-room. There was a very fair attendance of members, and before the social programme was commenced the lengthy business section was dealt with. Arrangements for a debate to he held between members of the club and of the C.E.M.S. were made. Garments for charity also were received. General knowledge questions were then put to the members and provided an interesting diversion. These were read by Misses L. Finch, M. Cruiekshank, M. Reilly, L. North and V. Holt, while an interesting paper on “Modern Development of Education’’ was read by Miss R. Potts. The hostesses for the evening were Misses G. Westbrook, K. Old, P. North and E. Rickit.
