QUOTA QUESTION.

DOMINIONS’ DIFFICULTIES.

BRITISH FARMERS' PLIGHT.

MINISTERS CONFERRING.

United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright.

LONDON, July 31,

A suggestion has been made that, as the subject of quotas and restrictions on imports of produce into Britain affects only the farmers in the Mother Country and the Dominions, and is not a matter which involves any trade controversy over tariffs, representative farmers in Britain and the Dominions should get together and discuss their respective difficulties.. On the one hand, it is said that the farmers of Britain do not appreciate what quotas and restrictions mean to the Dominion producers. On the other hand, the latter have no true realisation of the competition which the British agriculturist and, dairy farmer have to face from abroad.

It is understood that the Minister of Agriculture, Major W. E. Elliot, at present is giving this matter consideration. Undoubtedly he is impressed with the representations made to him by the New Zealand Prime Minister and Minister of Industries and Commerce, Messrs G. W. Forbes and R. Masters, as to the difficulties that W’ould be created in the Dominion and the effect on farming there if restrictions were imposed.

Major Elliot had a Anal interview with the New Zealand delegates on Saturday afternoon and later left for Scotland.

To-night Mr Masters is to meet representatives in-London of the Belgian Government and representatives of the Indian Government to-morrow in connection with an extension of New Zealand’s trade. He will seek a lowering of India’s tariffs against New Zealand.
