UNINSPIRING GAME. HAMILTON DEFEATS TAUPIRI. FINLAY CUP SERIES.

The first senior Rugby representative match to be played In Hamilton this season was between Hamilton and Taupiri in the Finlay Cup series and took place at Rugby Park on SaturdayDespite quite favourable conditions the game was for the most part scratchy, the defence of the Hamilton team being very weak.

The game was a benefit match for the. Waikato Social Welfare League and there was a good attendance.

The teams were as published. In the first spell some exciting play was seen, but the game generally was not up to representative standard. Taupiri possessed a’vigorous pack and did the majority of the attacking. Their backs had individual merit, but lacked cohesion. The Hamilton van wa.s outpacked and could not hold the visitors. The local back division staged several promising movements, but they combined effectively on only two or three occasions. The defence of the whole team was weak. Th© Run of Play.

The early part of the play was all in favour of Taupiri, the visiting forwards, by bustling tactics, keeping Hamilton bottled up. Taupiri were hooking the ball from the scrums at this stage. A good effort by Catley, from a free wide out opened Taupiri’s account- Taupiri 3, Hamilton 0. •Catley had to retire, and M. Welsh replaced him. The Hamilton backs operated, but made little ground. Hamilton equalised when Gilling cut in neatly and set the baoks off, Por-teous-finishing the movement off with a determined run. Hamilton 3, Taupiri 3.

It was not long before Dempsey, with a side-step sent Porteous over m the corner. Clarkin kicked a great goal. Hamilton 8, Taupiri 3. With Taupiri on the attack, Hamilton were penalised, but Smith failed. A brealc-away by Cassidy for 25 yards raised the crowd to its toes, but K. Welch overhauled him. Hamilton were given a free and Clarkin- kicked another great goal. Hamilton il, Taupiri 3. Hamilton were obliged to force down a little later, but Taupiri returned and were awarded a free. McBUrney failed- The game was more exciting at this stage, K. Welch, Denby and Souter shining out hi TaupirDs pack. . At half-time Hamilton were attacking and 'he score was: Hamilton 11 Taupiri ' d The Second Spell. Hamilton failed with two free kicks in succession and the game became soratchy. Cassidy, Chitty and Robinson were hard toilers in the Hamilton van, Cassidy and Chitty figuring in every attacking and defensive movement. Gilling out through smartly twice, but wak mostly well marked by Moßurney. Cassidy increased Hamilton’s score from a free kick. Dempsey, behind the scrum, was throwing out good passes. Carlson went off injured from the Taupiri backs and McKenzie took his place; Mcßurney raised applause with a good goal from a free. Taupiri 6, Hamilton 14. 'The play was hard ir the forwards and the referee had occasion to caution one of the visiting forwards. Hamilton staged a bright, though disjointed passing rush, but a good return by Mcßurney, Smith and Belcher saw the last named score a great try. Smith failed. Taupiri 9, Hamilton 14. The visiting forwards now definitely had the upper hand and were doing all the attacking. The final whistle blew with play in Hamilton’s territory and the scores— Hamilton I 14 Taupiri . 9 Mr R.
