TENNIS AT WIMBLEDON
CRAWFORD v. STEDMAN. NEW ZEALANDER BEATEN. RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S PLAY. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, July 1. In the All-England lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon to-day in the fifth round of the men’s singles Crawford (Australia) gained an easy victory over Stedman (New Zealand), but it was valuable practice. The huge crowd of spectators generously applauded Stedman for his plucky fight, especially as he was recovering from indisposition. Crawford quickly settled down to a display of delightful tennis and his beautifully placed shots drew constant applause. He won the first three games. Stedman lacked his opponent’s repertoire of strokes. He won the fourth when Crawford placed a ball just outside the lines with a back-hand stroke. After that Crawford played perfect tennis. Stedman served excellently at the opening of the second set. Twice he aced Crawford, who lost a little of his accuracy, enabling the New Zealander to win two of the first games. The Australian’s back-hand brought the score to 4—2, Stedman retrieving well and getting many shots seemingly out of reach. Sometimes he caught Crawford out of position. Crawford, volleying superbly, took the set. Stedman almost faded out of the picture in the third set. He could not reach drives on the wings. Crawford was in his best form and Stedman could not cope with his battery of shots. Although Crawford lost the seventh through over-driving he immediately clinched the set. The King and Queen, Princess Alice and the Earl of Athlone were interested onlookers. 'Often the King led the applause when Prenn was struggling to overthrow his opposing giant. Saturday’s Games.
