WOMAN DROWNED.

NEAR MAUNGANUI BLUFF. SWEPT OFF ROCKS. HUSBAND’S NARROW ESCAPE. (ny Telcgrapn.—Press Association.) KAITAIA, Sunday. Last evening Mrs Thelma Gwendoiene Powell, aged 33, wife of - i Sidney Dyson Powell, farmer, ot Takahue, was swept from the rock'll ear Maunganui Bluff. Her husbanr, who was with her, managed to cling to the rocks, but Mrs Powell disappeared in the boiling surf. Mr and Mrs Powell arrived at Maunganui Bluff on a camping rip yesterday afternoon. They were accompanied by Mr and Airs Barker, o Tirau, the latter being Mrs 1 owell 3 sister. On arrival they pitched their tents and just at dusk Mr a nd Mis Powell walked down on the rocks at the foot of the Bluff. Just as Mr and Mrs Powell were about to cross a channel in the rocks, a suden high wave swept in. Both were thrown off their feel, hut -R Powell managed to cling to a projecting rock. lie heard his wife cal out above the roar of the surf, hut when the wave receded she was not in sight. WHANGAREI, Monday. No trace of the body of Mrs. Powell, has been discovered, despite the efforts of searchers. Deceased leaves four young children. Her parents reside In the Waikato district.
