SILVER ON MARAMA.

TWO OFFICERS ARRESTED. ALLEGED ADMISSION TO POLICE. AUCKLAND, Friday. Stanley Arthur Smith, aged 33, second officer, and William Henry Noy, aged- 27, seventh engineer, were arrested on the arrival of the Mararna from Wellington yesterday, on charges of attempting to export coined silver in excess of £2 without a permit from the Minister of Finance.

The men later appeared in the Police Court, Smith being charged with attempting to export £Bl 8s 6d in silver, and. Noy £65 in silver. Upon Detective-Sergeant McHugh asking that accused should be remanded to appear in the Police Court in Wellington, Mr Moody said his clients would like 1 to sail by their ship when she leaves Auckland for Sydney. They would return to Now Zealand on the ship in 14 days and would give an undertaking that they would not abscond. The authorities had the silver which it was alleged wts to be exported, and in addition accused were willing to enter into a bond of £SO each. If they were remanded to Wellington they would miss their ship. Mr Moody said there was no doubt the silver was found in their possession- The question was whether they intended lo export it. The Manama left Wellington for Auckland, and not for Australia. It was a matter of Jaw whether they came within the meaning of the regulations or not. They intended to plead not guilty. Mr MoIIugli: According to my file accused admitted to the Wellington police their intention to export the silver. It is alleged they had special belts with receptacles to conceal the silver.

Upon accused promising to keep away from the Mararna, the magistrate remanded them to appear in Wellington on Wednesday, bail of £SO being allowed in eacli case.
