PROPOSED TARIFF TRUCE.
THE OBJECT IN VIEW.
BRITISH CHANCELLOR EXPLAINS

The Chancellor of .the Exchequer, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, in the-House of Commons to-day referred to the proposed tariff truce. He said the object was to discourage starting new upward initiatives. It was not Intended to prevent the completion of operations already begun. The Import Duties Advisory Committee would continue to perform Its statutory obligations, inoluding the receipt and examination-of applications for alteration in duties, but the Government, during the truce, would refrain from increasing customs duties in respeot to applications not received before May 12. The Chancellor mentioned that an application in regard to silk duties had been made before May 12.
