Automatlo Cow Counter —An Otakeho farmer, Mr H. Whitcombe, Taikahu Road, has invented a device for counting the cows in his herd as they are milked and go through' the bail, writes “Rusticus” in the Otago Daily Times. On several occasions Mr Whitcombe was faced with the trouble of missing cows, and in a large herd of nearlv 100 It was difficult to tell whether* all had been fully mustered or not. It was not uncommon for •one or two animals to be overlooked in the gorse and scrub, and on one occasion a beast was lost all night. This meant a considerable loss of .milk, and in order to overcome the problem of missing cows Mr Whitcombe set about constructing a counting device. After much thought and effort' he evolved a contrivance which has proved* successful. Each time the gate lever is opened to allow a cow to pass out it works a cam which trips a ratchet and causes a number disc to rotate. Each time the lever Is operated the disc revolves in a manner similar to that of a mileage speedometer, and the total number of cows is displayed on the dial. On the primary dial the numbers register to nine, while on the secondary dial the numbers are registered in tens. On several occasions this year the invention has-recorded the absence of cows, and has enabled a search to be made for them immediately on completion of milking.

DON T LET YOUR COW§ SUFFER / THE CARE OF THE UDDER is of the first 7 importance in the Health of the Dairy Cow. Mr. C. R. MELLINGTON, WHANGAREI, writes :—“A fortnight ago your tin of Animol reached me, and the result has been so satisfactory that it is only right to congratulate you on its wonderful curing powers. When I sent for it I had no faith in it, as from past experience I had not received any benefit from all others I had used. I may say' It has cured the worst cow in thirteen days. I have not known her teats free from sores and cracks for the last 5 years. I shall recommend it to all and sundrv. i'KES’S ANIMOL, all stores—}-lb. tins, 6: Mb. tins, 2/6. SURVEYORS.
