BETTER TONE ON MARKET
A better" tone prevailed in the market for hides at the fortnightly sale held by Auckland brokers yesterday. Buyers were fully represented and keen competition developed, with both exporters and local tanners showing activity. Practically all grades of hides advanced by about id to id per lb. Cow hides appreciated to the greater extent and the general average of prices is now about 2d above ruling rates last year. The bulk of hides exported appear to be going to Australia, which favours a light type. Dried sheepskins also firmed on late rates and tallow was £1 a ton higher for the best mixed.
