THE ESSENCE OF ECONOMY
ADVERTISING AND SELLING. It Is estimated that between £IOO,000,000 and £180,000.000 has been spent on advertising during the last year," said Principal J. F. Rees of University College, Cardiff, at a luncheon of the Cardiff Publicity Club recently. “Any industry In which such a large sum of money is expended is worthy of consideration. “Advertising is the essential third stage in the development of selling. The first was selling in bulk when the purchaser wanted to see the actual thing; the second was selling by sample, when the buyer saw only a part- of the consignment; and. last of all, is selling by description, the chief form of selling in modern times. That method is advertising. “The cost of bringing an appeal to the individual by advertising is from a hundredth to thrce-humlredllis of the amount required to establish contact \ by personal visits.’’
