CHASE AFTER THIEF.

A SUSPECT CAPTURED.

LATER ESCAPES PURSUERS

(Special to Times.) TE AROHA, Monday.

An unsuccessful though exciting chase after a suspected thief took place in the Brookfield and Waitoa districts as the result of a burglary at the residence of Mr R. Walton, of No. 7 Road, Brookfield. Mr Walton entered a room about 7.30 p.m. to find his belongings strewn over the floor and cupboards and drawers ransacked. A chase was immediately instituted after the suspected thief, who was believed to have decamped on a bicycle, and a cyclist was captured on suspicion about half-a-mile along the Waitoa road. When questioned the man stated emphatically that he had just left a resident on the same road and that he had not been in the vicinity of Walton’s house. Leaving him in charge of two young men Mr Walton inquired of the resident mentioned and discovered that he had received no visitors. After informing the police he returned to the scene of the capture, only to find that largely on account of Ills insistent denials, the suspect had been permitted to leave. A second chase was given immediately and t'he fugitive was sighted in the vicinity of the Waitoa Factory. He led an exciting chase amongst the factory buildings, and railway yards, but although forced to abandon his bicycle he managed to elude the pursuers.

At 10 p.m. the search was abandoned without any further trace being found of the fugitive.
