winner of Scholarship
At the Christchurch competitions festival, the final of the piano solo for the Competitions Society's scholarship on Wednesday was played. Results were as follows: —
Piano Solo, society’s scholarship, 10 and over (open to those who have not. won a pianoforte scholarship)—Miss Myra Sutherland - (Ashburton), “La Cathedral Engloutie " (Debussy), test piece, 157 points; own selection, 102 points, i. The judge said that the class had been a very fine one. The winner’s work in both sections was splendid and consistent, and she was wise in selecting a piece within her powers. The judge wished to express appreciation of the wonderfully sonorous tone and fine lefthand work of the winner’s playing. Dominion Test Recital, women “Endymion ” (Keats) (It). —Miss Molly Baker (Dunedin), 85, points, 1; Miss Molly O’Sullivan (Dunedin), 83 points, 2: Miss Nelly Henaghan (Dunedin), 81 points, 3. The judge said that the piece for this important section was a difficult one. Restraint was necessary to get the full depth of Its beauty. Many competitors lost marks through being too strong of voice.
