RUGBY FOOTBALL.

LATEST HAMILTON PLAY.

NO SURPRISES ON BATURDAY. OLD BOYS AND FRANKTON LEAD. There were no surprises In the third series of Sage Memorial Cup matches at Rugby Park on Saturday. Ideal playing conditions ruled. Old Boys and Frankton consolidated their positions at the head of the senior Championship table with sweeping victories over the two new teams, Horotlu Works and Railway respectively. Indications now are that Old Boys and Frankton will feature In the final for the championship, but a surprising reverse Is not removed from the bounds of possibility. Marlst, last year’s champions, found Technical too severe In the other senior game. Results at a Qlanoe. Old Boys 34 v. Horotlu Works 3. Frankton 21 v. Railway 3. Technical 9 v. Marlst 0. CRICKET SCORE. OLD BOYS' VICTORY. HOROTIU WORKS DEBACLE. Experience, co-operation and training gave Old Boys a cricket score victory over Horotlu Works. Horotiu started well, but gave way at the finish of the first half and ended by fading out altogether. The teams were:— Old Boys.—Patterson, Parker, Lissette, Voice, Barling, Johnstone, McDeil, U. Johnstone, Somervell, Playle, Hall, Coombridge, Tombs, Hammond, G. Chitty. Horotiu Works. —Skinner, Dalbeth, Wright, Tye, Walker, Goodwin, Wells, T. Cooper, M.~ Cooper, Franklin, Clarkin, Howard, Speight, Monteith, G. Cooper. Horotiu took charge immediately, against the wind. Old Boys were lucky that- Horotiu lacked the polish to take advantage of the few openings that offered. Old Boys kept the ■chances down by desperate work. With the first relief Old Boys woke up and overcame their opponents. With the change the game became more open, Old Boys’ forwards feeding their backs to good purpose. The handling by the rearguard rewarded the forwards’ efforts and a series of pretty, but short-lived movements followed. Horotiu weakened perceptibly under continued pressure, and Parker got through to score a try.'' He was quick enough to take immediate advantage of the opportunity, but had Horotiu not been floundering the opening would not have been possible. Llssette missed with a good kick from a hopeless position. aid Boys 3, Horotlu 0. Old Boys showed no mercy and with Horotlu again all at sea in their own territory Parker again sized up the position, and went over at the corner, taking the flag with him. With wind and angle against him Lissette failed to convert. Old Boys 6, Horotiu 0.

llorotiu were not so mu oh to blame for the next score. On the half-way line Parker gathered at top speed and lore off up Held, side-stepping several men on his way. Handing off the last man he trotted round to score between the posts. Lissette converted. Olil Hoys 11, llorotiu 0. From a scramble on the line which was anybody’s game an Old Boys’ forward crossed, Lisselle missing. Half-time came with the scores; —• Uhl Boys 14; llorotiu 0. After the Interval. In the second half Llssette crossed, Coombridge’s kick falling short. Old Boys 17, llorotiu 0. llorotiu carried play to Old Boys' line, Speight plunging over. His effort to convert, failed by inches, llorotiu 3, Old Boys 17. From a movement along the lino, Johnstone cut in to soore, Lissette’s ' kick hitting tiie outside of the post. Old Boys 20, llorotiu 3. Lissclic then added from a penalty Old Boys 23, llorotiu 3. Out 'of a solid bit of milling Old Boys’ backs got going. Parker was tackled on the line, but too late to prevent him scoring. McDell, who was setting the ball for Lissette let it go and handled again, the kick being forfeit accordingly. Old Boys 26, llorotiu 3. Fumbling, llorotiu let Old Boys take the ball on the bounce. Hammond securing, made an easy path for himself to score'Under the posts. Cobmbridgc missed. Old Boys 29, llorotiu 3. An eighty yard run by Johnston resulted in Barling crossing and converting his own try, the game ending without further score. Old Boys 34 llorotiu Works 3 Mr E. Thorpe was the referee. FRANKTON TOO GOOD. SEOOND SPELL GALA. RAILWAY BACKS OUTCLASSED. In a fast game which was scoreless at half-time, Frankton figured in a dashing revival which deoimated Railway, the final scores being 21—3. The teams were: — Frankton.—J. Denz, Clemctt, Everest, Griffiths, Welch, Snodgrass, L. Dcnz, Charleston, Hall. Tristram, Tui Rua, King, Painlon, Byrne, Prlscott. Railway.—Gregan, Ellery, Hemi, Hunnarn, Craig, Ciiitty, Keats, Phillips, Stewart, Hogan, Porter, Davies, Wilson, Paget, Holloway. Fed by L. Dcnz, the Frankton waeks operated early, Gregan nabbing Griffiths within striking distance. Railway counter-attacked, Ellery taking the ball to the line. Illegal scrum tactics gave Frankton a free, and the danger was over. Frequent attacks by the Frankton forwards were repelled by the opposing van, who employed Hie dribbling rush effectively. Play continued on even lines, both packs battling well in tight and .loose. Frankton drew first blood immediately after the interval, Ted Everest gathering in to go over between tiie posts. L. Don/, converted. Another assault, two minutes later found Railway off their guard. Painlon.fell on !he hall in touch after a forward struggle, Les Benz again converted. Frankton ill; Railway 0.

Fast following up by Welch saw the speedy second five-eighth snap up five yards away and score. It was a fine try. Everest’s kick failed. Then Railway revived and in a forward rush Paget went over in the, corner, notohing their only - score. Hemi failed with the kick. Les Denz collected in a passing exchange and •whipped across for a good try. He collected the extra points, bringing the points total to 18. Railway received a disappointment when J. Denz was beaten by Hannam, who ap- , peared to score, but the teams were recalled for a five-yards scrum. After some desperate play before the goal, Welch went across again Everest failed to add the trimmings Railway, fighting hard, were forced back again and again, the opposition getting the scrums and line-outs Fluctuating play followed until the finish, when the board showed— Frankton 21 Railway 3 Mr S. W. Davis was the referee. It was even pegging till the interval, with Railway near scoring on several occasions. Frankton then launched a series of rapid onslaughts and never looked hack. Hooking cleanly, their forwards gave ample supply and the backs played havoo with Railway’s defence. It was a case of greater experience, combination and weight proving irresistible. Railway’s packmen were effective at times and won advantages with dribbling rushes, but their backs were very patchy. AN EVEN GAME.

TECHNICAL OLD BOYB v. MARIST. Hard, rather than fast play, with both teams of backs trying to open up the game and having their efforts nullified by the spoiling tactics of the opposing forwards, were the characteristics of an evenly-contested match between Technical Old Boys and Marlst Brothers Old Boys on No. 3 'ground. The teams were:— Technical.—Lewis, Gllling, Porteous, Haughey, Neilson, Clarke, Smart, Roe, Peart, Pardington, Robinson, Clough, Harwood, Foster, Attwood. Marlst.—P. Clarkin, Wright, McCormack, White, Brodrlck, Clarke, Dempsey, Pollook, Goodyer, T. Cassidy, F. Cassidy, L. Clarkin, Roach, Remits. Marlst who took the field with only fourteen men, won the toss and Technical kicked off against a light breeze. Twice the Marlst forwards worked play down to their opponents’ goal-line, and twice Haughey relieved with good ' line-kicking. Eventually Dempsey got his baoks away, and in a dribbling rush Brodrlck, who was playing well at seoond five-eighth, was just beaten for the touch down. Clarldn missed an easy shot. Technical then took a turn at attacking and weak tackling l>y Marist hacks let Haughey away on a shattering run to Marlst twentyfive, where he transferred to Porteous, who dived over under the posts. Pardington missed an easy kick. Technical 3; Marlst 0. Tight play in mid-field was the order for several minutes, when F. Cassidy emerged from one of the sorummages in obvious distress. It was found that his right collarbone had been fractured and he had to retire. Offside play by MoCormaok gave Pardington a chance at goal, but the shot went wide. At the half-time the scores were— Technical 3; Marlst 0. • The Seoond Spell. W. Cassidy replaced his brother, Frank, and on resuming play Marist used their forwards In several attempts to equalise the scores by up and under taotics. Marist made several creditable efforts in most of which T. Cassidy was but sound defence by Porteous, Haughey and Lewis kept them out. Next Technical took a turn at attacking and an infringement by T. Cassidy gave Pardington a chance wide out. He collected the three points with a nice kiok. Teohnical 6; Marist 0. From midfield Roach made a nice ■opening, but over-eagerness by Marist backs spoilt a golden chance, Teohnloal being caught out of position. A moment later Clark (Marist) who was playing well, dummied nicely and ran right to Technical’s line, where Portedus saved by a neat interception. At this stage play was stopped on account of an Injury to Clarke (Technical), who had to go off as the result of a knock on the head. On resuming Smart set his backs going and the passing rush ended In Haughey going over In the corner. Pardlngton’s kiok missed.
