COMPETITIONS CONTINUED LADIES’ SERIES COMMENCES. RESULTS OF THE LATEST GAMES. Favourable playing conditions prevailed for the second series of games in the Waikato Hockey Association’s competitions at Steele Park on Saturday, and with the teams displaying Improved form some good matches resulted. The ladies’ senior competition was also commenced, Hula and Technical Old Girls being the only teams, to meet locally. Results at a Glance. First Grade— Kalpakl 2, Hinemoa 1. Colts 7, Pirates 2. Cambridge 2, Old Boys 2. Second Grade — Cambridge 7, Technical B 2. Hinemoa 2, Kalpakl 0. Ladles’ Games. Hula 3, Technical Old Girls 2. Matangl 5, Horotlu 0. kaipaki successful. GOAL UP ON HINEMOA. VICTORS’ BETTER COMBINATION. In a match which produced plenty of action but little spectacular play.

Kaipaki defeated Hinemoa by 2 goals to 1. It was a hard game, in which Kaipaki showed the better combination, and wore down the opposition. The teams were:—

McKenzie, E. Taylor, T. Allsop, A. P.owdrlll, J. Morris, W. Froude. Foster made the first opening for Hinemoa, who wer? going well when they were held up for an infringement. The teams sparred for territory in the early stages, and play see-sawed near half-way, with Kaipaki having slightly the better of things. C. Bones was doing great work. A brisk movement in the Hinemoa van saw the opposition goai in danger, hut Smillie cleared by kicking the ball past half-way. Kaipaki continued to hold the advantage, with Foster and Powdrill playing a useful game for Hinemoa. Both sides were tackling well. At one stage Hinemoa had Kaipaki fighting hard, but mishitting and the solid defence of the visitors kept them out. Hinemoa came back to the circle again, and from a corner Powdrill sent in a hot shot which lievv over the bar. It was a lucky escape. For a time the attackers pressed strongly, but Smillie kept his goal intact. Cowley's Good Effort. The opening goal came to Kaipaki when Burrows picked up smartly from a throw-in and centred to Cowley. whose goal shot found the net. Play livened up, and Hinemoa fought

hard to equalise, but there was no alteration In the score at half-time. Up and down play opened the second session, and there was little between the teams. A splendid solo run by Taylor placed Hinemoa on e\ ( en terms with the visitors. Taylor received the hall from a throw-in in the Hinemoa half, and ran right through the opposition to score unopposed. Kaipaki rallied, and In the ensuing play-were several times unlucky. The visitors were dominating the game, but Hinemoa showed strong defence. 0. McKenzie effected' a great save at one stage, but Kaipaki weer not to be denied, and their reward came when Burrows hit through from a melee in the circle to score a good goal. Previous to that, they were twice unlucky. Hinemoa fought hard lo equalise in the closing stages, but they could not break through, and the game ended with ttic score— Kaipaki 2 Hinemoa . . . t Messrs W. 0. Fabling and E. McLachlan were the referees. A DRAWN GAME. OLD BOYS AND CAMBRIDGE. A drawn game resulted from the meeting of Old Boys and (Cambridge, both sides scoring two goals. 11, was a fast and exciting match, in' which the honours were evenly distributed. Cambridge did well lo hold the strong old Boys team, who. were ahead at half-time.

Dillon, L. McKinnon, A. McKinnon, P. Bright, C. Kehely, I. McKinnon, D. McKinnon, W. Kehely. Old Boys had the early advantage, but did not hold ground for long. Play continued at a brisk pace, with Cambridge having the better of things territorially, for a time. Ewan was a stumbling block In the visitors’ attacks, and they could not get past him. Sim did good work on the wing and was responsible for a smart breakaway, which looked dangerous, but was not productive. Old Boys were showing the better combination, but Cambridge produced some effective movements. C. Kehely was a tireless toiler, and Initiated more than one of these, movements. West, the Old Boys goalie, was called upon several times in the early stages, but he was playing a safe game. Following a passing movement in the Old Boys hacks, play reached the visitors’ circle, where Power was prominent, hut the hall went out, before any use could be made of it. Old Boys Scor- First. Old Boys came hack again and a brief tussle culminated In Craig scoring from an awkward angle. The lead was further increased shortly after, when Goodall scored after a brisk exchange in the circle. Old Boys continued to press until’D. .McKinnon broke through lo half-way. For a time Cambridge more than held their owh, and gained much ground

with hard hitting. Old Boys were penalised for obstruction, and a penalty bully near the goal mouth was 'won by C. Kehely, who netted the ball. Bright led a sparkling Cambridge forward movement from half-way, and in a desperate scramble in the goal mouth the ball was hit outside a few Inches from the post. Cambridge had the better of play at the outset of the second spell, but they could not break througli the solid Old Boys’ defence. Old Boys came on to the attack, and the ball passed from D. Pountney to West, Storry, and Goodall, for the latter to run close to scoring, Hoff and N. McKinnon getting there in time to save. Play swept up and down the field, neither side holding ground for long. At one stage the visitors were unlucky when the ball Hashed over the crossbar, but their reward for hard work came soon after when W. Kehely scored from well out after a strong attack. The game ended with the scores— Old Boys 2 Cambridge 2 Messrs B. W. Bennett and C. C. Hunter were the referees. ■ AN EASY WIN. COLTS DEFEAT PIRATES. With the score of seven goals to two, Old Boys’ Coils recorded a convincing victory over Pirates in a match which was won by superior combination. .The teams were:-**

It was an interesting game, although Colts had much the better of the play, particularly in the second half, when they scored four goals In quick succession. The winners had an outstanding forward line, with Lawry, McKenzie and Kelly a great trio. Badeley was the best of the halves, and produced some of ids old form with penalty corners. He opened up the game at every opportunity. Ilaverbier was sound in the rear division. The best man on the field was Vowless, who played a great game and was a fine leader. McDonagh was the most useful of a poor set of forwards, while McCallum played a good game in the backs. In the first half Kelly and Lawry scored for Colts, and McDonagli for Pirates. Colts made ground rapidly in the second half. Badeley scored twice from penalty corners, while the other Colls scorers were McKenzie (2). and Kelly.
